I find myself troubled some times figuring out what to do in the first hour of a tourny. Do you go for a quick limit or do you try and catch your kicker fish first. Please back up you thought process and or reasoning.

You cannot win a tournament on Day 1 but you can certainly lose it, or at least put yourself out of the money!

I will go after my limit fish first, fill the box then have your big fish spots to either add a kicker or upgrade your current bag! Even if you bring in a limit of fish your still sitting well in the upper 1/3rd of the pack and well within range of cashing a check!

Have a handful of big fish spots that are on your milk run after you have your box fish!!!

This is what I have learned in fishing tournaments the last 2 years. Betting on catching a kicker or two will do nothing but potentially waste time in filling your bag, and ensuring your place after day one, last place or zero! Its a gamble and if your a gambling man by all means go for it! I figure I pay entry fee outta my own pocket, I am going to do everything to ensure that I get some of that entry fee back!

If its only a one day tournament, still get your box fish early, then go searching for the kicker or upgrade fish!!

Just my opinion on what to do for tournament fishing!!!

It all depends on what style of tournament it is. Is it 1 day or 4 days. Is it a club tourney for points. Or a one day deal.

If its for points or mutiple days I go for a limit first. Simple reason its not a race its a marathon.

If its a one day money tournament I prefer to swing for the fence. My partner and I do not see eye to eye on this aspect he would rather look respectable and catch a limit then shoot for the fence and blank.

My theory is if being respectable usually cashes the same check as the guy who blanks.
