I have a Garmin 250c at my console. When I run it loses its signal. I have a single frequency transducer mounted in back. Is this normal? Is it too close to the motor? How do I keep a signal so i can run in shallow water? Also I am switching my finder on the bow what are you guys using up front? Anyone have a combo unit up front? I was thinking it may help hold on offshore spots. I am definitely putting a color unit up front.

Losing signal can be due to many things. If you go to the manufacturer’s websites they usually have good recommendations for mounting your transducer. A couple things you want to look for is that you’re not placing the transducer behind something that is causing major turbulance like a rake or something like that. Also, the depth that it’s exposed to in the water matters. Sometimes your transducer can get roughed up too and that will cause turbulance at speed. I personally have mine shooting through the hull in my fiberglass boat and that works really well although you may lose a small amount of sensitivity.

As for the bow unit, I use the Lowrance LMS-332C. I think they have been replaced by the LMS-520, click on Jolly Ann’s advertisement under fishing gear up top to see. It’s a combo unit and has worked well for me so far. Go as big as you can afford to so you can see it when you’re standing up.
