I never would have thought that I would have bass thumb on March 27th…However. I do.
Yesterday, I got into the first group of fish of the year. I was extremely happy to just stick some fish no matter the size. Today, I went back to the same area, and even more fish seemed to have moved up into this backwater, because they were absolutely on fire. It went from taking a jerkbait with a slow jerk presentation with pauses to a non stop jerk motion to get them to bite. They are aggressive and will smack anything. The main pattern at the beginning for sure was topwater. That’s right, I said topwater. They would bust a floating rapala on top like nothing. I was taking a yum zellamander and buzzing it like a ribbit and they were clobbering that as well. Once the rain kicked in, we needed to change our techniques to stay on fish. The jerk retrieve from before was still getting fish after fish after fish. However, they were all dinks. After a couple friends around me caught some slightly larger fish on flipping jigs, I decided to start trying one myself. It wasn’t 2 minutes after switching and I stuck an absolute fatty. It wasn’t a hog but a good, fat 15 inch largemouth. Zac Cassill and I both each caught 6 or 7 keepers. We both caught 70+ bass with most being in the 12-13 inch range. Just like yesterday, You needed to show up before the pressure came. There were several other people fishing today and it made the fish get spooky. I caught almost all of my keepers right away, the last one coming on the flipping jig finally towards the end. My best 5 was probably no bigger than 10 lbs or so but boy it feels good to stick a limit fishing power/topwater techniques in March!!
Get out there an whack some fish!
