I drove by this little private sub-division which was right on the mississippi river..well it had their own little harbor and it looks a little fishy i walked up to the mouth of it and it had a no treaspessing sign along with no fishing

The Mississippi is connected to it with no obstructions to it meaning trees.I always thought if you could get to it from the river without touching any trees or land you could fish it.All this place is a private little harbor which the river is connected to it..can you fish it legaly or not???

It depends on which state you were in, but in Iowa the waterway is public if it connects to a public waterway.

The shore, and even the bottom, are not. They could have no-trespassing signs along the shore, but if someone can get from the river in there (like you said, without touching bottom or trees), then you can fish it.

There was a similar situation a couple years ago on pool 4. If I remember right, Jon J made some phone calls, wrote some letters, and down came the gate.

In MN if you can access it without trespassing then you are legal.
The gate that you are referring to was on the Croix. The owner of Redwing shoes was involved if My memory serves me correctly.
There was also an incident in RW that involved and off duty deputy that was fishing in the Docks. Owner recieved a citation.
I’ve heard rumors that there is a harbor in Hastings North of the bridge that has also tryed kicking people out of the lake that his harbor is in. Tell them to call the cops.

I have been kicked out of a couple boat harbors around the Quad Cites, once by the harbors owner and once by a cop. Not sure exactly what the law states, but I do know they could give you a large fine if they feel like being jerks. Seems like more and more of these areas are popping up all the time.

I JUST HAD THIS HAPPEN THE OTHER DAY! BUT UP BY THE FISHING FLOAT ON POOL 10! THERE WAS ONLY ONE PERSON ON THE FLOAT FISHING AND IT WAS ON THE OUTSIDE I WAS ALONG THE BANK AND THERE IS A CABLE FROM LAND TO THE DOCK BUT IT IS SUBMERGED! I GOT OVER THE CABLE AND WAS GOING TO FISH WHEN THE NEW OWNER COME OUT AND SAID NO FISHING INSIDE THE CABLE! NOW THERE IS NO SIGNS UP ON THE LOWER END AND THE SIGN ON THE TOPS SIDE REALLY MAKES NO SENSE! I DONT SEE HOW A PERSON CAN STOP SOMEONE FROM USING A PUBLIC WATERWAY! I KNOW HE NEEDS A PERMIT FROM THE U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE TO RUN IT BUT CAN HE STOP US FROM FISHING THERE! NOTE I WOULD NOT FISH THERE IF THE FLOAT WAS FULL OF ANGLERS BECAUSE THATS JUST COMMON SPORTSMANSHIP! AND THE GUY THAT OWNED IT LASTYEAR HAD NO PROBLEM WITH IT! MAYBE LEN AT FALLING ROCK CAN ANSWER THIS! THANKS GUYS!

Iowa-Illinois Boundary Waters – Special Regs

Iowa or Illinois fishing licenses can be used by hook-and-line anglers on the Mississippi River proper, including its backwater lakes and sloughs contiguous with the flow of waters in the main channel.

You cannot fish from or attach any device or equipment to the main bank of the Mississippi River under the jurisdiction of the state where you are not licensed to fish.

You cannot fish in any tributaries of the opposite state.

You must conform with regulations of the state in which you are fishing unless the regulations of your state are more restrictive, then you must conform with the more restrictive regulations.

It’s what I was able to find, looks safe to me – Gianni out.

I talked with the corps of engineers and this is what he said..If a developer or anybody digs out and makes there own harbor or little backwater and the river flows into, that is considered private property and they can keep you out!

If you get permission to fish it,you probably can’t fish it in a tourny since all spots must be accessible to everyone
