Crayfish in Livewell-won’t bite on Crayfish colors

Looking for some answers to a big HUH. Last tuesday the 2.76 # smallie I caught spit crayfish parts all over the livewell. At the same time that fish and the others would not hit my crayfish patterns????? They are tried and true patterns and lures. Instead they all hit Shad/shiner patterns, and they didn’t have crayfish scent on them.

So my question is why?? My thoughts were that something different than same old same old crayfish but the pieces were so large and undigested it clearly ate the crayfish recently. Any ideas??

I think another question that begs to be asked is when did those fish eat those craws? They could have eaten those craws earlier in the day. The shiner pattern you were using was a good one for the most part because those pin minnows and small shad move up into the shallows around dusk, which was the time you were fishing. We came across lots of small bass chasing minnows on rock banks wherever we went. I think the forage availability is another issue here too.

Oh, and pitbull, what is with the Team Supreme fixation?

“Reel” Good call, Blue Fleck. Careful, you might soon be called “The Professor!”

    Seriously, very good observations. Thanks.

I would relay many of the thoughts Tom has mentioned. The other plausible explanation is that these fish while in feeding mode were picking up crawfish and when no longer of this mindset. Then once you came along with a shad pattern it was purely opportunistic and they jumped on it. I would assume that these fish were suspending in the current breaks away from the general crawfish population and like Tom mentioned the forage base dictated the forage be of a lighter more natural hue. I have seen time when color made all the difference however I do feel strongly that presentation is more important in triggering strikes.

‘The Professor’….ummmm…..no, definitely not. I’m still very much a student of the game. I found that out the hard way last Sunday. I’ve fished a spot of mine for years(10+) only to discover in one day I’ve been missing some of the best fishing that place has to offer.

I like to think of Bass fishing as an equation. You already know the answer, =Bass. The hard part is finding what presentation, location, and combination will find you the answer =Bass. It may take days or weeks, then again it might only take a few minutes. Taking notes helps alot too. Whether they be mental or written on the back of your hand for future use, notes do help.

Blue Fleck it was about 5:45 when I got it but already there was some sign of the silver stuff. Not really spraying
but a little batch of jumpers once in a while. I see turtles do that so much that I don’t really depend on it till I see what is chasing. I do depend on the fact that there is food there. I almost always alternate through Cray to shad and minnow colors anyway no matter what I see around for bait. Actually Jeremy it was on natural rock in 8 inches of water. I didn’t realize that they jumped back and forth on there choice of prey. See I learned something again. In daily fishing with my turkey baster I usually only find one kind of food in the gut, but that is with Largemouth, and walleye.

Pitbull, maybe if you put your name on your profile RC Tackle could track you down. You might be the Labron James of the Upper Mississippi! Big time contracts will be in your future when you get back into tournament fishing! The competition should be getting nervous. Hope to see you at the BFL in La Crosse.

Glad to see you around again. How is Austin treating you these days!
Get back up here so we can go out and catch a few fish.
