Just curioius whether or not the backwaters are opening up on pools 4 and 5. When does the landing at the alma marina open up normally? Any info on either pools would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It depends on what you consider backwaters. Most areas with current are ice-free slack waters still have thick, strong ice. I’m betting on April 1 before they open.

I was out on saturday near LaX (pool 8)…everything that looked like a bass had ice on it. Anything with current or springs was pretty much open. I would imagine that’s all changing fast with the rain.

Ice breakers are from the Corps they usually have a tug come up and break a channel through all the way up the river. They make a nice channel and all the ice breaks upu pretty fast from there. Word in the paper is that there is one on the way up and should be in or near LAX…

Pretty much everything is open now. most of goose backwater, shady maple…I’m sure target lake is open or close to it by now..we were running back there last Friday breaking through some floating ice, but it was all broken up back there already. I think this weekend we will be good to go in just about any backwater area

Anybody know anything on pools 4 or 5 yet? what about the big lake area and beef slough? Also peterson and robinson lakes? How long before the alma marina opens up?

I am sure they are still ice locked. Will not be long with warmer temps and rain!

I don’t think you can fish in beef slough until the regular wisconsin opener. Unless you could make a claim that you are fishing for crappies and throwing small raps or traps.

I was talking about the part of beef slough just south of big lake, on the west side of the tracks. I just heard that the first tow went through alma last night, any word if it broke through pepin yet?
