I know it has been discussed before and I could ask some of you in PM’s but I thought I would throw it out to the whole forum. I really need to start getting a little more specialized in my gear. Jeremy and others were very helpful

with slop selections, but I really need some help on flippin gear, mostly the reel.

I use mostly Curados for everything now. I think it is good to use basically the same equipment if you can. I really like my Curado 200 with my Falcon Cara rod with 30 pound Power Pro. A Castaic would probably be a nice choice for flipping. I use this rig when fishing slop also and I am happy with it. What do other people use for slop fishing? For tournaments I take two flipping sticks, two worm rods and a crankbait rod.

For flippin and pitchin I use a 7’6″ Team Diawa rod and a shimano castaic reel for jigs, and a Team Daiwa LT rod and a shimano calais for tubes and smaller worms. I have never had a problem with either one.

    I use a Shimano Calais and a 7′ med/heavy St.Croix avid. I use 20lb. P-line. Hope this helps

    I use a 7’6″ Big Carolina Allstar, and a Curado, with 20lb
Power Pro. I chose the Allstar(all other rods are
    St. Croix) because I wanted a one piece(not collapsible)MH
rod, and at the time, it was one of a few available. I
wanted the extra sensitivity of a non-collapsible rod, for
the jig/tube suckers that can feel like a piece of coontail
hanging on the jig. Now I see St. Croix has a 7’6″ MH in
their Avid Musky Casting Series, that would probably have
gotten the nod, if I would have seen it at the time of
purchase. Anyway, the Allstar can double as a heavy
Carolina rig rod, or a mean slop rod, too.

Thanks for the suggestions. Do these reels all have the flippin button , or don’t you need it?

The Shimano Castaic does, I have used it for 2 years without any mechanical problems with the flippin switch. Seems to be a strong reel. I think I paid about $160

    MM,

I do not like the “Flippin” switch feature. When I
flip, I already have the amount of line I plan on
working out, and the reel engaged. If I am pitching,
I’d rather feather the pitch with my thumb, than engage
a quick stop switch. For me it is just one more thing
to have trouble with, and one more thing to coordinate,
as I try to softly pitch to a spot. But I know of others
that like the feature, so you might want to borrow a
reel for some “lawn practice”, and see which one feels
better to you. If things are working well, on the lawn,
where the jig does not bounce when it lands on the grass,
you will have a soft entry in the water. “Lawn Practice”
really allows you to focus on your technique, and the
flippin/pitchin equipment, rather than worry about trolling
motor adjustments, or banging the jig off the boat.
