I was flipping through the latest issue of BassMaster Mag., reading the “Day On A Lake” section. In it Scott Rook made a comment about seeing a lot of Deer on his way to the lake and thinking because of it, the Bass bite should be good.

I’ve subscribed to that notion before. Sometimes it’s true and sometimes not.

My question is, has anyone else seen a correlation between the movement and feeding patterns of animals and fish?

I’m not sure about fish, but I remember somebody making a post in the hunting section about deer movement in correlation with whether or not the cows were bedded or up and moving around

-On a seperate note, if you are a believer in the moon phases effecting animal movement, then I would agree because we all look for the moon phases when anticipating the spawn right?

I’ll buy that….we have talked more than one time about that very same thing on the way to Mille Lacs. Cutting over from I-35 to the lake on Cty 18 there are alot of small fields…if the deer are up and moving the muskies seem to be active If they aren’t, then fish for bass
Its kinda like sitting on deerstand without seeing anything and after a couple of hours you notice that you havent even seen a squirel or bird
Weather, barometric pressure, moon phase…..affects everything!
There are patterns and predictions that can be made!

They even say that women are prone to show more clevage during the full moon!

Was wondering why I saw more cleavage the other day…I’ll be sure to pay more attention (to the moon phases) in the future…

must have something to do with the gravitational pull of the moon. Kinda like tides??? …

with this type of reasoning, if your woman is showing her stuff, logic says you should be muskie fishing-damn!

Correct me if I am wrong, but deer also sense the weather change and will feed to get throught he “bad” weather.

I saw that comment in the magazine also. I thought about it and was debating as well..Sounds kinda like one of those old timer comments that are usually just odd cooincidences, but you never know. it makes sense, animals are animals and the all tend to base their behavior off the weather..as often do we. I know i will most likely be in a better mood when its sunny and 70 out…animals relate to the weather as well. However, I would never be discouraged if I didn’t see deer on the way to the lake, and I wouldn’t spend too much time worrying about it either

It’s more than just activity. Deer and largemouth are more alike than many think.

Let’s see… Deer feed and roam more just prior and during pressure changes from fronts (as bass do), deer prefer cover for protection (as bass do), deer use fence rows for travel (bass travel on manmade structure ie. seawalls, dock posts, bridge pilings, etc…), deer travel and can be found often near ridges, valleys, etc… (bass obviously congregate near areas with more contour ie. ridges, valleys, etc…), Bigger deer will travel more toward the bottom of a ridge instead of on top (bigger bass are more often found on the deeper side of ridges, etc…).

Basically, mark up a good depth chart where bass tend to travel and shack up… then get a land topo of your favorite hunting land and you’ll be surpised how similiar the two are.

If that’s not enough proof that the two are dang near brothers, I can continue with the way a largemouth positions and travels in current compared to how deer position and travel when windy!!! You think big, lazy largemouth are the only things that want to lay out of the current (wind)? When they do travel they both travel into the current, they can be found near funnels, etc…

You can continue. How about the way they both tend to hang with others of similiar size, breeding verses moon phase, color typically matches their environment, OK, I’m starting to just make up crap now…or am I? Sounds good at least…

    OH DEER… MY BASS BROTHER!

I have noticed, when the cows are laying down on the farms on the way to fish in the mornings, the fishing is slow. Well at least thats my excuse if I struggle in the morn. But seriously keep your eyes on the cows.

Some other similairities that Deer and Bass have in common are
    1. They both consume most of my time
    2. they both are the cause of 99% of the fights I have with my fiance
    3. most of my money goes towards the pursuit of them

Yesterday I noticed a lot of activity going on..Turkeys were on the move and actively feeding in corn fields ( I have seen a lot the last few days) Although I didn’t see deer yesterday, I have also seen a lot of them..and the cows were also actively feeding and moving around. I went fishing. I dind’t catch a thing. The shad were active though!

maybe we would have done better in optimum conditions. Yesterday was proof that just because the weather situations and all those little “signs” won’t necessarily dictate the fishing. It might play some role, but face it, cows, deer, and turkeys are not effected when the river/slough you are fishing has doubled in flow, and turned to chocolate milk. Thats how it was yesterday

The water temps are still WAY too cold to think you can go out and have a successful day bass fishing. Patience Miagi-son!
