    Ike,
I can share that the same bucktails, plastics & crankbaits that we use for eyes do put several bass in the boat for many of us.Maybe that is why we have so many bass guys fishing here for eyes?

    Ike,

Dean is right. Most of the smallies I catch at Redwing are in the same location as the walleye and sauger and hit the same baits. A word of caution, some of the fish are in deep water and show signs of damage from the depth change. They may have their stomach protruding out of their mouth or worse, their eyes popped out of the socket. My feeling is to leave the deep fish alone till they come up in the spring.

So i am going to need to head up by the dam. I heard that this time of year it can be combat fishing!!!! Is there any where around there that will have open water away from the crowds that are still worth my time. Also what water temp can i expect and typically where should i be looking. Pretty fresh at this river business so any help would be appreciated. If you don’t feel like putting it on here shoot me a p.m. i am not looking for grandpas secret spot here i am just wondering situations or scenarios to be looking for. ike

Warm Water – rocks – jerkbaits, roostertails running by the 400 walleye boats; thats all you need to know

BomberA is right about the rocks. I always seem to catch my earliest fish in the spring on rip rap bank, especially on sunny days. The sun heats the rocks and the water in the immidiate area can spike 2,3,4 maybe even more degrees warmer than elsewhere depending on how warm out it actually is. I’m new to the jerkbaiting, but have good luck flipping sweet beavers and craws. Same goes for in the fall too.
More than 1/2 of the 7 or 8 spots I’ve put together so far for my early spring milkrun include rip rap banks. The rest are all deep wood

    Ike,

The first warming trend should bring em up. The water temp will hover around 40 on the good days but any increase will ring the bell.

It can be hectic up there but most of the walleye guys will be off shore. You have two choices of where to fish. Lock and Dam 3 is split between a lock side and a channel side (with the roller gates). There is little current on the lock side. Not all of the fish will be on the banks. Look for deep wood and bottom contour. The last school of smallies we hit were on a deep area where 15’ swung from the bank into the channel.
