From what I gathered, the guys were mostly pitching jigs for these fish. But, I also have to wonder on a few other techniques that were used.
The water temps were in the mid 40’s and Rojas was using a frog and catching fish. So, one of the questions I have is why could we not throw frogs in the early part of the season? Is there that much difference between there and here? I would have thought that water temp would affect bass in the same way regardless of geographical location. I guess I was just really suprised to see him do that.
Of course KVD was doing what he does best throwing reaction baits and of course doing very well, as usual.

I fish the Wis. opener, first Sat in May. Spend a day fishing for eyes and crappies then I spend a day or two fishing bass. I have a area up by Hayward that I use buzzbaits and frogs from day one. I find a dark bottom bay with wood and weeds with water temps in the 50’s when I start fishing topwater.
It can be done Watts. Most of the time other techniques just work so much better that guys do not fish that way.

Last year in mid April I was catching bass on frogs and the water temp was only 45-47 degrees. If you can find the right areas, you will be able to duplicate that technique. When doing this though, I like water that is no deeper than 2 or 3 feet. You also have to make sure that you are casting paralell to the shoreline. When I use this technique this early in the season, my boat is almost hitting the shore sometimes.

That is interesting, thanks for the feedback guys. I guess I have been programmed to use frogs or other topwaters once the weed mat was established and the water got real warm. I figured early season was mostly pitching jigs or using jerk baits.
