Mike. 5a is no good. It’s just full of northerns and carp!
I agree.
Ryan, my wife says she will take you out in the Cat on Pool 6 this spring and show you how to fish a Popper.
Amazing comment about 5A, especially from a guide.
Mike, as I mentioned in a personal E Mail my Best Bass day was on 5A. I must have caught over forty including some over 20 inches, durimg two days when a tournament was in process. Sounds like you are mostly Bass guy but if you are interested in Walleye during the late spring/early summer send me a personal PM and I will provide a few suggestions. I will be camping on 5A with my dog Timber and my son and his wife.
As for my personal goals most revolve around fish, but they are as follows in no specific order.
1. Spend more time on Pool 7. A long time ago that was the best Pool we ever fished.
2. Catch a 28 inch or better Walleye. Ironically, in 1987 I caught two that size or slighly bigger. Both were released and I don’t even have photos. Figured I would catch a 30+ but it hasn’t happened.
3. Catch a Musky, period. My son and I go about 5 times a year, but last year was a complete zero on my end. He caught three.
4. CPR and make a replica of a SM Bass over 20 inches and a LM Bass over 22 inches.
5. ditto for Crappies, but over 15 inches. For whatever reason while fishing for other species the kid and I have caught some hugh crappies.
6. Hire a guide for Pool 5, perhaps Jarrad. My results have been mixed, but my brother-in-law catches lotsa Walleyes, even during July. He teaches schoolin Rochester, but lives in Buffalo City.
Again, great post. As for the guys that criticze Pool 5A; opps, time to shut-up.

Dude… relax… Sarcasm. We all agree, 5a is a great pool… as are 4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12, and my favorite 13… Most of us on this forum love to fish the river, and there are some fun “shots” we take at the different pools.
Back to the SMACK… MossBoss… I’d take Darla any day! Who wouldn’t take a lawyer that catches 5# largemouth on topwater in 40 MPH winds fishing when given the opportunity? You know, who wouldn’t believe those fishing stories!
Seriously, she smoked us all that day… was it the boat, the guide, or the fisherwoman? Or, just the fact that there was a “party” on that point that day!
Fishy. It was just a joke! RELAX!!! Also. I am not a fishing guide. I am a Waterfowl guide.
Pool 5a is a excellent pool for Walleye and Bass. I caught my heaviest weight in a tournament on that pool. The star must have been lined up!
Blue. I will take you up on that.
Fish. If you want a Bass guide, check with John Stears on this site, riverfan. He guides on pools 4-5.
Tom, sounds good. If I remember correctly you live in Dresbach, and when not camping stay at my Dad’s in Winona. Send me your phone number and I will make a note on my E Mail to contact you.
Hey Fishy, it was a joke, as I thought the would indicate. 5a is my favorite pool. Grew up on that pool. Now if we want to talk about Pools we truly don’t like, I’ll start with 6. I need to follow the Loos brothers around more on that Pool.
ReelGuy. If you ask her, it was the fisher, if you ask me, it was the guide. Either way, it was pretty cool, her biggest bass ever, though it wasn’t 5 pounds, unless you ask her.
I agree regarding Pool 6. I lived in Winona and commercial fished in that Pool for several years. There just aren’t as many locations as the other pools. I have managed to find a few spots that have been good at times, but not nearly as many as 5A.
I remember the last tournament I was in (years ago) took off from Latsch Island on Pool 6. It was labor day, but the temp was in the low 90’s. Two brothers, in seperate boats, bought in Walleyes over ten pounds. I found out later they locked upstream and both fish came from Pool 5A. Both fish were cuaght on Willow Cats.
