OK, it is time to share something I have been doing for the last 5 years. just want to share this with all you swimmers who make your own jigs. After the jig is made and before the skirt is added, push the weed gaurd down over the top of the hook, place a twist tie around the weed gaurd and the point of the hook, in front of the barb. Twist it tight, the barb will keep the twist tie from sliding back. Now place the jig in the oven at 200 degrees for about 10 to 15 minutes, then remove and serve over rice, {just kidding} thought that might be funny. After you remove the jig from the oven let it cool to room temp, remove the twist tie. The weed gaurd will stay that shape for ever, just laying over the top of the hook, weeds, grass will ride up over the point of the hook. Give it a try I know once you try it you will make them all that way.
Some feedback on what you think would be appreciated.
    Good Luck, Carl

    Interesting.

Question for you. How thick is your weedguard? I have had a few jigs which had the weedguard laying near the point of the hook and they would hang up often when in action. I’m curious to know if you’re doing this to a 7-fiber guard?

d-nort, I use fg-30 weed gaurds and dont cut the length until after I have molded the jig. Their are 30 strands in these weed gaurds. After the jig is poured with the gaurd in it, I cut the gaurd to the length I prefer, I then take out about half of the strands before forming the weed gaurd in the oven. You can take out more if one wishes, but their really is no need to. Once you put the twist tie on pull the gaurd towards the head of the jig to give the gaurd a nice bend, you will know what I mean once you try it. Good Luck

do you think that you could do this with factory style jigs? or would the paint melt?

    Dash,

Any chance you could show before and after pictures. You’ve peaked my interest.

    Dash,

Interesting tip. Have you seen any post heat warpage of the weed guards with them being restrained tightly in the oven?
Put me down on the list of pics if you wish to send them via email.

If you take a pocket knife and bend the weedgaurd over the sharp side of the blade the weed gaurd will take on the new angle.

Brovarney, that’s a good tip. I used to do it that way for years, but had a hard time keeping the strands from separating which would increase the chance of catching grass. the nice thing about heating them in the oven is that the gaurd strands stay together just over the point of the hook, and you can get a nice even round bend in the gaurd. no shrinkage at 200degrees, just don’t forget them in the oven. I haven’t tried factory jigs, but it should work as well. I will work on getting some picturs asap.

Just a note, I use owner deep throat jig hooks. Not sure if this would work with an ewg hook because of the length of the weed gaurd, the gaurd maybe to short.
