looking to start up some more conversation here in the Bass forum. I was wondering who al uses trailer hooks on here, or if you don’t. I personally don’t usually use them. I believe it can improve your hook up rate on buzzbaits and spinnerbaits, but just haven’t caught on yet. Anyone have any personal experience/insight on trailer hooks?

Trailer Hooks- Go or NO?

I do not use them on spinnerbaits. I will start the day fishing buzzbaits without a trailer hook, IF I get blow-ups without connecting then I add a trailer hook. After seeing a few fish caught on both the main hook and trailer I will get rid of the trailer again.
On missed fish I will always have another rod with a throwback bait close by.Ron
January 29, 2007 at 4:23 am #529201I just about always use a trailer hook on spinnerbaits, and buzzbaits. most of the time when fish are on the main hook on a sb the trailer is just moved off to the side, and not double hooking the fish.
Jack..January 29, 2007 at 4:23 am #529204Always in tournaments for me. When fishing for fun, 1/2 the time depending on how often I’m getting hung up.
January 29, 2007 at 4:28 am #529207sorry about that
I personally chose yes, and I realized that I should have put a sometimes category, because that isn’t true so much for me I don’t use them more often than I do, but still believe they are important. I’m usually using swim jigs anyway, and trailer hooks aren’t necessary. I know KVD is a big supporter of trailer hooks, but I just haven’t been convinced yet that it is making a huge difference. I have been satisfied with my hook up rate with spinnerbaits and buzzbaits, and can hook up probably 90% of the time with spinnerbaits, 80% of the time buzzbaits- as long as i don’t get too trigger happy

The minute you are in a tournament and lose even 1 fish because you don’t have a trailer, it will make ALL the difference in the world. I’m with Nostrodamus on this one.
January 29, 2007 at 6:52 am #529248I always use them on spinnerbaits, i think they are helpful as well, because you can get 2 hooks in the fishes mouth and they don’t throw the bait as easy. i dont throw buzzbaits all that much, so I don’t really use them on them too much.
January 29, 2007 at 1:18 pm #529260Yes, I use trailer hooks for spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and ‘Horny toads’ in open water and when fishing weeds.
when the woody cover gets too thick, I will remove the trailer hooks…
last year got to fish Roy Lake (SD)…first cast with the spinnerbait I remember distinctly thinking ‘really ought to put a trailer hook on this’…didn’t, tossed it out, got slammed by a big aggressive smallmouth (would have been my personal best by a long, long way)…which promptly spit it back at me at boat side…
Did stay with me long enough that I got a very good look at it…
Trailer hooks GOOD! … big fish have a way of revealing our level of preparedness…
January 29, 2007 at 3:09 pm #529305Very interesting topic, if I use a trailer when walleye fishing I use a small gold treble sometimes up to 4in. behind the jig. So many days 90% of the fish caught will be hooked cleanly in the mouth,(on the stinger) I feel that the eyes and saugers will just “nip” at that tiny little flash especially on neutral days when the bite is tough. Have experimented with putting a very small blade on the stinger with surprising success-of course it’s nice not to need one at all which I’m sure most would agree
January 29, 2007 at 5:17 pm #529386i will not throw spinnerbait without a trailer hook nor a buzzbait..period–if the cover is to thick i will be throwing a swim jig instead.

January 30, 2007 at 5:42 am #529854I rarely use a trailer hook.
Where I normally fish “blades” a trailer does me more harm than good…
