The drought is over the smallmouth are on. 47 degree water in the backwater on one of my favorite smallmouth spots. Best fish was 3.2 lbs Caught on a jig with a plastic trailer. She thumped the bait with authority, but still not much fight. Still made me smile…

Where you out today? Pool 4 or 5? I can’t wait for a day off, I’d like to get down to 4 to cure my illness… Fishless for so long. Good Luck!

April 3, 2003 at 1:27 pm #262937Good to here things are happening away from the wintering areas. I got my fix on Sunday. I fished the wintering areas on Pepin. Got 14 fish with a 18.5″ for the best one. Had one larger break my 6 lb. test line.

April 7, 2003 at 3:56 am #263394Soon as I catch a Smallmouth the “gravel carp” season is over for me. Little slow yet but with warm weather on the way next week the smallies will be on the move, shaking off the cold water blues, and streching those lines…
April 7, 2003 at 5:29 pm #263440I spent a couple days on Pool 4 on the 22nd & 23rd of March. Put 8 fish (3 LM, 5 SM) in the boat, it reached 70 degrees that sunday afternoon and I got a best surface temp reading of 47 degrees. The biggest was a 3lb largie. Sure felt good to set the hook and have something pull back. A couple of the fish bit agressively but most were pretty light biters. Haven’t been back since the cold weather moved back in but I plan to be there this weekend!
LoomyApril 7, 2003 at 9:37 pm #263464Just so you guys know how hardcore I am, I spent about 7 hours on pool 5 between Saturday and Sunday. I got 16 LM 1 SM 1 Northern and a walleye in the 6lb class. When I went to some of the spots I fished Saturday, the were froze over on Sunday. Some did clear by the afternoon.

7 hours in 2 days, hardcore???? just kidding – I’m the guy you gave the KFAN tournament poster to advertise at the ramp sat afternoon. I had to put in about 10 hrs on pool 5 saturday just to catch 4 LM and 2 SM. I guess if I were more efficient I wouldn’t need to fish so long to make up for it;)
April 8, 2003 at 2:06 pm #263548Superfluke,
Kind of wondered if you wern’t one of the FTR regulars. Thanks for taking the poster, would like to see more guy’s from your area fish the KFAN/St. Jude tournament. I did have one advantage over you on Saturday. I put several schools of fish to bed late last fall so I knew where they winter. You and I did about the same on Saturday, what I figured out Saturday helped on Sunday. I took 10 fish on Sunday.
See you on the water.April 10, 2003 at 6:50 pm #263777Loomy,
Better have done your excursive this winter or your arms will be hurting!!!
April 10, 2003 at 10:01 pm #263790It’s funny you mention that. After my first trip to the river I had sore legs from standing all day (darn office jobs). Since then I’ve been biking and lifting to get back into fishin’ shape. Bring on the bucketmouths… I’m ready for ’em!
I sure hope you’re right. I’d love to have sore arms and sandpaper thumbs again!

April 11, 2003 at 4:11 pm #263868Just for a refresher, can you give some info on what areas you would target for the smallies? What are you using?
Thanks,
ps can you answer soon? I am trying to get out in the next hour or so!
Time now 11:20 Friday April 11th
