Smallies are in they’re prime right now out on the Great lakes. As the waters hitting that majic 47 degree mark, the fish are setting up on transistion areas from rock to sand, rock to gravel, depth has been dependant upon light penetration, but concentrate on depths in 15-40 fow. The action has been non-stop for true slobs and here’s just a couple pics:

    Nice fish Jim.

Too bad you had to catch those out of a Ranger.

I love the coloration of those smallies and the background look pristine. Do you see much boat traffic or are you basically fishing alone most of the time?

we’re all alone in the group of guys i go with. Seems that people put the boats away too quick! I think i still have another trip in me yet. Something about catching 35+ 5 pounders in a weekend does something to a guys head- like make you want to go and break ice at the landing just to get out! A friend got an 8 pound 14 ounce smallie last year during this next weekend

So what lake are you guys on and will they hit just anything? i am of course not looking for the honey hole just is this doable anywhere this time of year???? wow that is incredible 35 5lbers wow. that 8lb 14 could be at least a line record if not a state record. ike

this is doable aanywhere they have the food source, wintering area and flats to feed on. These fish were tricked into biting jerkbaits and tubes over 30fow. the biggest hurdle is braving the elements!

At least you were able to find some protected areas. The wind was howeling 20 – 30 that weekend and the area you where at leaves little for protection or the faint at heart. Great fish Jim go and sack-um up again.

    Lets see…

I live near Racine (I know, insert joke here) and am very close to the “Great Lakes”. We have food and flats…but very few smallies. I wonder what “Great Lakes” you’re talking about…

    Monster fish though…

believe it or not d-nort we were “sight fishing” these fish in 29fow. Now think back to spring when your sight fishing and being suprised at how big a fish looks once it’s out of the water compared to when it’s in the water in three fow- now imagine 29fow. These 5#’s looked like 12″ers down there. But none the less, i learned something that i will use forever- and that is how critical that transistion line is for these smallies at this time of the year.
