Topwater mono.

I typically(not always) fish topwater baits like Chug Bugs and Pop-Rs slowly. When I use them on rods rigged with flouro. the line sinks and I’ve seen it hamper that action of the lure.

So my question is: Does anyone use mono exclusively for topwater?

Excluding things like frogs and horny toads in the slop, I use it exclusively. Floats, is abrasion resistent enough if you get the right kind, and I think the stretch is a benefit when using lures with small trebles (full sized spooks excepted). It’s not like you need a gargantuan hook set with a topwater either. I can’t ever come up with a reason NOT to use mono for topwaters.

I am with MossBoss on this one as well. I usually use 12#-14# mono test on my Pop-R’s. My biggest reason is because it floats and keeps the nose from dropping down and not giving its tradtional blurb on the surface.

Mono for all top water except frogs and toads. Flouro sinks and the nose dives then. 8# spinning for PopR’s, 12# for spooks, flukes and prop baits.

    Uh-oh… no controversy?

I agree, too. In fact, this year I have been experimenting with various lines… and have found myslef back where I started 4 years ago… ALL my rods have 15# P-Line (The Flourocarbon coated Mono). Okay, except for my rat rod and my swim jig rod… then my 30# Power-Pro get’s the nod. So, 2 rods with braid, and 8 rods with P-Line.

I bought a spool of 14# Trilene Maxx for my topwater rod. I’ll let you guys know how it works.

Blue. I have had great luck with Sliver Thread Excaliber in 8-25 # line. Very abrasive resistant and great knot strength.

That’s the same topwater line I use Tim.

What is Trilene Maxx? Is it new?

I think that Trilene Maxx is relatively new. I found it at Gander last night.

I’ll know how well it works after stretching it on some Upper Miss. Smallies at the end of this week.

Have you found them? Pool 7 is a mystery right now for me and Smallies…smaller one’s mixed in with Largies, but the 15+ inchers have vanished… Guess I have to wait about 3 weeks!

I found a couple nice ones last Thursday. The 2 biggest fell on a Bandit crank and a Chug Bug.

When I said Upper Miss., I went WAY upstream. Where the river looks like a creek…

so when you all are talking about using mono for top water, you are talking like pop r’s and skitter props right? because I am getting all confused, you all keep on making me change my mind on what i want to get spun up on my reals. sure wish someone would explain what line is supposed to be used for what. they people that work at Gander all tell me differently. I am trying to learn how to fish way better than I do right now, and I don’t think that there is a chance in whatever to get me to fish any better.

so I am kinda doing it right then,

i have 3 rods strung up with 30# stealth for top water frogs, and 3 strung up with #14 trilene mono for working plastics, tubes and powerbaits.

man I have soo many questions, I guess I will have to keep on trying, i just haven’t had any luck with my plastics yet, been fishing them for 2 years, I have a feeling that I am doing something wrong. I have even stooped so low, I went out and baught a dvd to watch of Al Linder catching some huge lunkers.

but thanks a ton for all of the great information on this stuff. i know I am driving the wife nuts with all of the fishing talk, but I will catch on one of these days.

You want Braid for slop. Mono, Hybrid, Flouro for flipping, tubes, worms, ect. Mono for floating top water such as poppers, skitters, spooks, toads. Flouro works great for sinking baits like flukes, senkos, jerk baits, swim jigs. Flouro line sinks and mono floats!

i dont know guys. maybe im all wrong here.myself i use spider wire and nothing else unless im carolina rigging (leader) or split shotting. my buddy uses mono& floro. once in a whaile one of will do much better than the other but not often.i like bread cause i can FEEL EVERYTHING
.i often hear the hit just before i feel it when use a steady to almost steady retreave.this is my thought on this subject (for what it is worth)

If you ask 100 people, you’ll probably get 70 different answers.

I use mono for almost everything except fishing heavy cover (grass, pads, slop) when I need the horsepower of the braid to get the fish up and out.

That being said, I haven’t experimented much with flourocarbon line. I use it for leaders when I’m carolina rigging, but that’s because of it’s invisibility, not any of it’s other properties.

I’m using stren 12 lb flourescent blue and it works great for my spooks, poppers, and buzzbaits. I’ve had no problems with it at all until today on a good fish… It didn’t break at the not, but down at the reel. I set the hook and started winching on a spook and all of a sudden, snap! it was gone. there was like 20 ft of line hanging on top so i went over to grab it. I got up to it with the trolling motor, about 3 feet away just out of reach and woosh….it takes off (fish still on!). So i lost my spook, lost a good fish, and left 20 ft of line in the water! otherwise the line works great…

Cade i would be willing to bet that there was nick in your line or something like it. Check all of your guides and your roller on your reel for scratches or cuts that could have caused this. i use nearly the same line as you Cade and have been very happy with it. ike

mono is the only way to go for top water and baits you dont want to sink fast. I switch from mono to fluro on crankbaits depending on the depth and presentation. But if your going with trebles on top go mono
