Hey fellas, just wanted to take a straw poll. I’ve been considering getting a Lucky Craft Sammy. (I kind of want the one with the prop on the rear treble, too.) Its action looks real nice and it sounds like it displaces a fair amount of water with its motion. Plus, the colors are nice.

Anyway…yes or no, is the Sammy worth the $15 price tag??

    Thanks!

I have a pile of Sammys, and I can’t raise a fish on them. I tried them on Mille Lacs and ended up going back to my Chug Bugs. I can honestly say, they have a great action, but I can’t buy a fish on them.

I’ll keep throwing them until I get it right.

The G-Splash 80’s are a great bait too. Those things throw water a long ways!

Personally, I would buy a Gunfish first. I’m not a huge Sammy fan either. I know some who are, but I just don’t get my money’s worth with them.

Theres a nother site on the web, almost everyone there swears by them…Course they all love the chatterbait too… honestly, i’ll stick to my superspook juniors. When the bass are schooling or hitting on top anytime, I personally think its much more of a reaction bite. those fancy paint jobs…Forget about um…if you catch enough fish on the bait, the paints gone anyway…

And if you look at it from the fish’s perspective, all they see is the bottom. Who cares what a top water looks like on top unless you’re trying to attract gulls.

Super Zara Spook Jr. – about 5 bucks – awsome colors, construction, and action.

Ditto! Try the Okie Shad color. The Chart top is easy to see on top of the water. It helps to see if the fish has it down.

I personally love sammy’s and would recommend them. I would agree that fancy paint jobs often are to just attract anglers, however when the water clears out especially in the fall I’ve had experiences were that finish can make a difference. Also, sammy’s have a much different action than a spook does. If you look at the bait in the water it has more of a tail down rest were as a spook sits flatter at rest. One of the biggest reasons i like high end baits is that it is much easier to stop and start their walking action in high current areas.

If you do get one it’s hard to beat the chart. shad color for the river .

Don’t write off color too fast. Pending on the lure, it can make a difference.
Because some lures do roll when twitched. This can create a color scheme to trigger a bite.

However when it comes to prop baits or if you know a lure doesn’t roll when twitched, the color technicall means nothing.

    I’m with Blue – I either suck with Sammy’s or Sammy’s suck?

I have moved to Spook JR’s or Devil’s horse for top water stick bait action.

i had a sammy given to me this year and i have chuncked it a little. I has a little different action than a spook and i wonder if it works at a different time than a spook would just cause it is a little differnt. I would personally never buy one for 2 reasons one we have toothers and many of the southern guys who really promote them don’t have to worry about as much and 2 the same reason i will probalby never own a skeeter, 200 dollar sunglasses, it is just alot of money for one lure. ike

    G. Love-

The price tag to me depends on how you look at it. Some guys will never buy a $15 lure. I was in Cabelas last weekend, though, and a bag of Senkos is now like $10. A Senko lasts maybe two fish tops for me. So if you are willing to spend $10 on a bag of Senkos, I don’t see why someone should have a problem with a $15 LC.

Go ahead and try it, if you like it, and catch fish on it then it’s a bargain, because it will far outlast a couple of bags of plastics. If you don’t like it, you can always trade it off on a couple of bags of Senkos .

BTW, for the record, I’m a Zara spook and super spook fan.

thats why i don’t buy gycb senkos either. Im fine with 3 dollar tiki sticks…The best wiggle i found on a senko personally was actualy from a $.99 bin at wal-mart. They were riverside and came in 5 packs. Caught at least 4-6 fish on them and could milk more with superglue. They wiggled more than tiki sticks or gycb. i am a true believer in cheaper stuff. I also agree…with pike around, a 15 $ sammy can turn into 15$ down the toilet. If i lose 4 or 5 dollars, i’ll be angry but i can just buy 2 more with the 15 dollars i just earned mowing the lawn. If i lose a sammy im out of luck

I have some Sammys and I don’t like them. They are touchy and haven’t produced for me like the old reliable Spook family. I’m sure they produce well for others, but I can’t seem to do much with them.

I have two 100 size and three 85 size that I’d sell for $10.00 a piece or the whole lot for $40. I’ll pay the shipping.

I can’t believe this many guys haven’t had success with a sammy. Just out of curiousity how and where are you fishing them? Water conditions can play a big role too. From my experience the sammy fishes more to the finesse side of the topwater spectrum. That being said if the water is more stained a louder bait would probably work better.

Much of it from my opinion comes down to what you personally have confidence in. No confidence typically = no fish .

kwikstik I’d be interested in the whole lot at that price. PM me colors and details .

I bought 7 of them off eBay, all of them brand new. I bought them for a trip to Mille Lacs Lake in hopes of fooling a big Smallie into eating it. It didn’t work. I would cast that Sammy into the same spot I had a Smallie chase a Chug Bug and never got a sniff.

That water up there is clear too. You can easily see down over 5ft.

The colors I have are Aurora Black, Frog, & NC Shell White.

I can tell you, I wasn’t over-working the bait either. Most times they would hit it with little or no action.

I agree Mr. L. Although I am not much of a topwater hard-bait guy, I can tell you when it comes to a “walk the dog” presentation a Sammy rocks!

Jim Jones and I fished a tournament years ago down on Beaver Lake where water clarity was a factor and trust me…those fish wanted the Sammy.

Speaking of Sammy-lovers…you out there Bomber A? Brad clued me in on a few schooling bass secrets when I fished with him last year .

I was fishing with a buddy on the Missouri River and he was nabbing some smallies with a Sammy. I went to Bass Pro to get a few and saw the price and figured it was more than I wanted to spend. I was looking around and found some various knock-offs. I just started using them but have had a few bass hit the Bass Pro Slim Dog . The action is good unless the water gets too choppy. They’re not exactly like a sammy, but at a quarter of the cost, they’re at least worth a look.

BPS has another bait – the Walker that may be a little more similar to the sammy overall. Anybody use these baits? I haven’t tried ’em yet.

sammys are the best straight walking bait on the market today for flat water. I caught big bass for our tourney on pool 10 this year on one and would have had it the first day if the 19 inch fish wouldnt have been sick that decided to eat it. I have a sammy 100 and a 110 the 100 is in chartruce shad and the 110 is a clown color. the 110 is better for choppier water but I have found if there is any chop I opt for a super spook
