I must really be missing the boat here but i just dont understand how they can do a study on culling fish when the fish that have been culled are long gone.

Some more information from talking to the DNR.

Knowing that they could never study culled fish in a regular sanctioned tournament…they held their own “mock tournament”. It was held last year if i’m not mistaken.

Details– A limit of bass was given to groups of anglers. They were instructed to go out and fish for a given amount of time. (ex.2hrs.)

After 2 hours(for example), they would meet back w/the DNR and the DNR would give them 2 more fish.(for example) The 2 fish that would’ve been “culled”, were then given to the DNR and studied with whatever methods they were using to study the fish.

This happened over and over through out the day.

I don’t know full details on the results, but can try to find them and post them when I get them.

Actually Slop, I participated in one in June of this year on Balsam Lake.

The DNR had shocked roughly 180 bass 2 days prior and had them penned up in the lake. They had us cast to them and they hooked the fish on and we reeled them in until we had 5 in our livewell. After that we fished for two hours like we normally would. After 2 hours we came back and put one fish in a designated pen and then they hooked another fish on and we reeled it in and marked it seperate from the original 4 fish. Then we went for another 2 hours and came back and did the same thing 3 times. They had all the groups of fish in seperate pens to keep track of those that were there for 2 hours, 4 hours, etc…

I know the results are still being compiled. Maybe the Snowman will chime in as he is a little more in touch with the DNR than I.
