I am heading up the the eagle river WI area in the end of Sept. Anyone know what lakes in that area are best for smallmouth? I have four days to find some fish. Any suggestions? You guys know a better place to go within five hours of SE wisconsin?

There are some good smallie lakes up there with really clear water, and I mean clear. Some lakes you can literally see like 15 feet down. My favorite smallie lakes up there are Metonga, Anvil and Butternut. If you like fishing rivers, then fish Boom lake in Rhinelander and go through the lake into the Wisconsin Flowage and Wisconsin River. There are no monsters, but a lot of 2-4 lb fish.

I would also suggest fishing Pine Lake in Hiles. It is about 25 minutes from Eagle River. It is the best lake I have ever been on for largemouth. You will go home with some serious bass thumbs from that lake. This lake if full of 3-4.5 lb fish. There is also a chance of catching a monster. Last year I caught a 23″ largemouth that had a 12″ bullhead curled in his mouth when I caught him. The fish was easily six pounds, but we did not have a scale to know for sure. I did however manage a few pictures. Let me know if you need anything else.

    Ben
