BassKing27 (nick) and I were out fishing in goose island yesterday. We were hitting up the slop with frogs. There was certainly no shortage of hits. But i couldn’t hook up. Nick had 1 on but it got off. We were fishing back at moss piont when a dead bluegill just kind of floated in. We were bluegill fishing at the time so he grabbed it and put the hook (little mic ice jig) in it’s mouth as a joke and casted it out pretending like it was fighting. He was draging it over the surface of some slop and a huge bass just comes up and smokes the thing. The hook pops out of the gill’s mouth and into the bass’ mouth. It snapped his line almost imeadietly. It was probably the funniest thing either of us had ever seen fishing. We casted our frogs again whare that bass hit. Nick got 2 missed hits and I missed 2 doing the same thing with another gill (that is legal here, I checked). All in all, it was an entertaining day of fishing.

yeah i think it was a fairly productive day on the wateri lost two bass in the slop to start the day off. then i came back and set the hook into a smallie that would have been imposibal for him to through(right in the roof of the mouth) max had some good hits on a frog as well in the beginging along with his own smallie he caught right away. Then we fished gills so i could try and figure out what i have been doing wrong with playing fish and i think i got i some what figured out. i then pulled another dink bass. and through a frog to finish the day up. That dead blue gill idea was sweet i couldn’t believe he smoked that thing before i brought it over the log.

How many did you actually catch, don’t tell us how many you missed. I would like to know how many you actually caught.

I for one liked the post. It was an interesting story about two anglers experiencing some thing that had never happened to them before. It sorta reminded me of the time my brother, about 12 years old, was reeling in a small perch at warp speed across the top of the water only to have a mongo pike enhale the whole thing and take us on a hay ride in a 12 foot boat with a 6 hp motor.

We didn’t catch that pike either… but it makes for a fun story.

Reminds me of a time when I was fishing at Hat Rapids Dam up by Rhinelander, WI. I was standing on some rocks right next to the water & catching crappies left and right. When I would reel them in i would kind of drag them across the top of the water & then lift them out. I was dragging this crappie in and I got it to about 2 feet away from where I was standing and WHAM!!! a 45″ muskie hit the crappie and took it for a ride. The muskie ended up dropping the crappie after a couple of minutes, but it was a ton of fun while it lasted. When that muskie hit I got a huge rush of adrenaline; what a great feeling!!!

Funny you mention bluegills…Guess what this was caught on? I guess this fish was around 19″ or so caught at…..Hmm i wonder. Discovered this pattern in mid august through late september that worked well. We thought we would try for some flatheads. At the time, i didn’t know much about flatheads (still don’t) But i figured rocks were ok. Its only like 5 or 6 feet but thought it might be good. Well i was so excited when we had a run but was disappointed with the size of the brown colored fish until i realized they werent whiskered. They were bronzebacks! Well anyway we killed smallies down there using this oddball technique and usually had the place to ourselves as we went into the night still catching them. Now if i could do it again, i would probably throw a spinnerbait or swim jig to mimick the technique but ever since last year when we went to try it again, its been too chocked off with weeds. We had one run last august and lost it in the weeds..:( hmm i guess a brovarney gill swim jig should be real good come august….
well anyway guys, nice report. Think of how good it will be once you got the frogs down! Wow. Let me know when you wanna have another tournament…lol all in good fun. seriously though, you found fish now whack um. Get a swim jig on those mats instead next time, you might be surprised at your hook up ratio. I don’t throw many frogs after fishing with Jeremiah and learning how to swim jig the mats (which is easy) but hook ups come easier and confidence is high! Well good luck…Hey nick, wheres your boat?

oh i see. I guess i was just surprised since i haven’t seen you with it yet and I am ALWAYS out on the water and also ur always on shore. now that you have a little pattern working, you should be able to get a few out in your boat, when you get it back.

    James,
I agree makes for a good story.
I was up at the BWCA with my Uncle about 20 years ago, he was standing on a rock in about 3 feet of water, from his position he was still in ankle deep water. He has a sunny on and when he brought it in he had a pike still chasing it. He kept running the sunny round and round his feet but we could not get ahold of the pike. Sure was funny as heck though!
