Fished the bfl saturday went to take off across Poygan and took forever to get on plane. Once up motor was running fine. Checked no weeds. Have not had a chance to take the prop off and look for fishing line. I did notice I am low on oil but don’t think that would cause the problem. Any ideas what to look for?

Is this a new prop? Or is it one that was fine on holeshot in the past?
June 21, 2006 at 1:50 pm #455220I guess you probably had a full tourney load…live wells full, gear, full tank of gas, 2 guys in the boat.
1. What boat do you have?
2. Which motor? HP not that important but litres are (2.5, 3.0, etc) At leaast that’s what I was told.
3. Prop? (pitch, 3 or 4 blade) vent hole configuration?
4. Air temp?… Hot muggy weather effects my boat in the way you have mentioned…I was also told by a mechanic this is the number one problem of this condition, at least with my motor anyway.
5. Fouled plugs?
6. Were you idling long before you took off? I was told back preasure (whatever that is ) can build up effecting your hole shot.
My 19′ Basscat has a 2.5 litre 200hp Merc efi and I have experienced this problem in the past…these boats are notoriously rear-end heavy because of the gas tank configuration, combined with the sluggish hole shot of the 2.5 litre. With a little tweaking ( new prop, motor hieght, prop hole ventilation) I’ve got this problem, for the most part, solved.
You may also want to have your fuel pump(s) looked at, it or they may need to be rebuilt…the rubber diaphrams wear out fairly quickly if you use gas with ethanol. In other words it could be a number of things or a combinaion of things….Good luck.
June 21, 2006 at 5:52 pm #455289I have a tr20 with a 200 yamaha hpdi I had just idled out of the river onto poygan. Co-angler was waterfowler not a heavy guy. I have had the same load before and no problems. I am going to get the boat on the water this week and see if its still acting up. Have not had any problems in the past hope this turns out to be nothing. I appreciate the ideas. I would not have a clue as to what to check. Thanks

Why would he have a short in the livewell?
June 21, 2006 at 9:31 pm #455353i did, he looked like he was borderline but he didnt make it on the courtesy board
June 22, 2006 at 1:38 pm #455474checked the prop shaft last night no weeds or fishing line. Hope to get it in the water tonight and see what happens.
June 22, 2006 at 8:34 pm #455623Drop-Shot…It just dawned on me. I, too, had the same trouble on Saturday and what it came down to was not having enough water to get on plane. That water stays shallow forever. For some reason the bottom there just grabs my prop. You won’t notice it prefishing b/c your livewells are empty. I have a feeling you might jump right out of the hole on a deeper lake.
Hopefully that’s what it was.
June 23, 2006 at 12:37 pm #455734took the boat out last night and had no problems. I think it was a combination of the full livewells, gear and heading out of the river we were taking off into gale force winds. That wind was holding the hull up i bet. Thats my story for now at least. Hey D-nort do you have a yellow and white blazer? Did you stay at the travelodge in Oshkosh?
riverbassmanPosts: 269June 23, 2006 at 2:40 pm #455785Was the water real warm? I had trouble with my Mercury bogging out of the hole ONLY later in the day when the water was warmer, morning was fine (cooler water temp).
I popped out a plug out of my prop and more ventilation did the trick. Hopefully it is that simple for you.
