It was an interesting day on Pool 9… A guide to be from Tennessee, and wife came up to visit and fish. I knew ahead of time his home water has 9lb bass in it… so I warned him. Well anyway he came mostly to catch smallies, and get used to river fishing since he plans to guide on the Mississippi down by him and he really is a lake specialist.
Anyway both his wife and he got their 18 inch plus inch Smallies to bang their baits, and through the day,( 5:30 AM to 3:00 PM),we managed fish in mid threes about every 30 minutes.
We had one amazing largemouth pick up a worm and let fly skyward and then left and right. It zipped by once just under the surface and rubbed the anchor rope , came back up and ran me around in another circle, came up to the surface and my guest took a stab at it with the net.. it clearly thought that was a bad idea turned its head violently and SNAPPED the line. This is the same exact spot the youngster/guide customer caught the 7lber… I believe the 7lber made it after we released it and is still alive!!!
He also reached for a fish that his wife was fighting on the main channel today with the net and the current pulled it away… this is a guy that catches 9lb bass and he was real upset he missed it and it got off. He said absolutely over 6#s.
This is really much , much better than I imagined the day would be and I certainly hope we have more like it this summer. Tommorrow were gonna escape to another body of water and fish some slop with toads and spinnerbaits. It will be very hard to beat today for size.
