Pool 8 No-Wake Ordinance

The La Crosse Common Council passed an ordinance limiting a portion of pool 8 to a No-Wake zone. The ordinance says boats are not allowed to exceed 5mph.

Basically the No-Wake zone would include the river’s main channel from Taylor Island south to the north end of Isle la Plume.

At this point the ordinance has to be approved by the DNR.

I’m not sure how it affects the Black River from the Big Indian to the RR bridge. I’m guessing it would stay 30mph.

I have no idea how long it takes to idle 5mph from the north end of Isle La Plume to Taylor Island, but the guys who like to fish lower pool 8 and pool 9 will have to take that added time into account for future tournies. After it’s been approved by the DNR of course.

I am assuming they are referring to 5 mph SPEEDO (which is normally max no-wake speed)…not GPS ground speed. I wonder what true GPS ground speed is traveling up river with the increase in flow as it currently is? 2 MPH? Wow, that’s going to be a long no-wake. I know, I know, you’ll make up for it going down river b/c your gps will read 8+ MPH ground speed.

    Where is Taylor Island?

I would have to believe, the law would be enforced by the size of the wake being thrown not the speed at which boats travel.

Taylor Island is the second island just above the Big Indian. They referenced Taylor Island South which would be the smaller one below it.

Sooooo, since half of the main channel is in Minnesota, is that side of the river in the “no wake” zone? How can a municipality pass an ordinance that they would need to enforce in another state?

The state line runs the west channel not the main channel.

    Thansk for the map Tom.

With 1/4 mile added on each end this appears to be the old no wake zone??? Why does the DNR approve a no wake zone…. the Coast Guard and Corp of Engineers control no wake don’t they?

It’a La Crosse County Ordinance. The Coast Guard & Corps have no ties to County Ordinances.

Believe it or not Slop for some reason I had forgotten all about the bypass. Still doesn’t answer my question about the DNR needing to approve it Blue. There are some major questions about Mississippi jurisdictions being bantered around right now and some possible legal actions … that is why I am asking. Any insight is welcome. Thanks

For those of you not knowing what slop is talking about place be careful as one could take out a lower unit going through a couple of areas in the back side.

There is, but not the island behind it

Bassman is right, you have to know this area b4 doing so…I’m not saying it’s wide open, Run it if you know it.

Just got off the phone w/DNR Warden Russ Wilson. We actually had a nice conversation regarding this slow/no-wake issue.

If you would like to send him an email to state your case as to why there shouldn’t be a slow/no wake, feel free to do so by emailing him at [email protected]

This is probably your last chance to get your opinion heard.

    Thanks.

Slop and I discussed the bypass earlier today. I just though he was going to keep it on the DL if we ever need it…

But you’re right MACK! I mentioned your name and boat during our discussion. . Would be nice .

That by-pass is definitely something you don’t want to try unless you know where you are going I have a friend who lives right next to the bridge there and in the summer they sit and watch people slam into the closing dam there

I bet I could get through it without taking a lower unit out

Seriously? I persoanlly can run the length entering from the south headed north, going west around BYC… but its at the closing damn to enter the channel at the top end that always has me squeezing my cheeks together… so, I chicken out unless the water is @ 9 feet. Is there a “channel” opening I am missing? It doesn’t seem like there is a clean seem through the closing damn.

I’d appreciate any insight or “close-up” map. Thanks!

    Nort,

Half the fisherman I talked to today had already been thinking the same thing….The secret was out…All the locals know it and all the out of towners will figure it out after the first person does it. Plus Blue’s Map didn’t help

well everyone except G-man I guess

I had a feeling thats where you were talking slop..theres a little slough that goes completely around there. I went thru it once myself, yeah theres a lot of crap in there, you can even see a big tree sticking up at the end of it. just curious, how do you avoid that big dam at the top of the west channel? I have never gone up there hardly so i probably won’t take it ever, at least not till i got a bigger boat, but my dad always said that if you tried to get thru u would hit the wing dam. I’m guessing that theres gotta be some markers on the side or something that allow you through right?

back on subject, man that really sucks. thats a long way for no wake

No markings on the closing dam that I know of. I had the bright idea years ago to fish the top-side of that West Channel c-dam not realizing the amount of current over the top. Long story short my boat sat on top of the dam until I got help off. Not good.

I don’t think we’ll have to worry about this until later this year…unfortunately that is when the level will probably be at normal pool .
