What Flipping/ Pitching line???

I’m not sure why I can’t just stick with one brand, but it seams as if I search for a new flippin/ pitching line every year. Here is my progression over the last 6 years…

    2000- Berkley XT Green 17#
    2001- Berkley Big Game 20#
    2002- Berkely Big Game 20#
    2003- P-Line CXX 20#
    2004- P-line Flouroclear 20#
    2005- P-line Flouroclear 20#
    2006- P-line CX Green 20#

I can’t remember why I left Big Game?! The year I used CXX I complained about how much memory it had and that I didn’t have much feel with it because of all the line coils between the bait and my rod tip. So I went to Flouroclear which I still LOVE (for other applications) because it’s so easy to work with (skipping, pitching, etc…) but I realized it has more stretch than I like. So now I’m onto CX (not CXX) and overall am happy with it. It does have more memory than flouroclear, but what a difference on hook penetration due to the lower stretch.

I only use braid on one of my flippin rods. I call it my gator-grass rod. But overall I do not like flippin with braid. I’ve broken 2 rods on hooksets and believe it can tear the fishes mouth on hooks sets as well. I also have a harder time skipping with braid.

I’m waiting for the cycle to wrap back around to BIG GAME and I’ll be right back to where I started 6 years ago… .

What line do you flip with…

I’ve been using 17# XT, but am going with 50# Power Pro this year for both flipping and pitching. You don’t need such a hard hookset with the braid since there’s no stretch. I’ll find out if I can hold back and still set the hook. If not, I’ll be buying a new rod and/or reel, and switching back!

my flipping rod is up at our cabin up north right now but when i get it back down here it’ll be spooled with either 65 lb power pro or 65 stren superbraid. i winched in a bass today on 50 lb power with that Quantum 7.0:1 reel. that power pro and fast reel got him coming right to the boat immediately.

CX Premium for the Spinning Rods.
    Flouroclear for the Flippin’ Rods.
    PowerPro for Pads/Slop.

Try some reel magic or some of the other line treatments on CXX. Still has some memory though. I heard Suffix was very good mono.

I like Flouro, though the knots must be smoothly tied or it can snap on hookset.

To be honest, I haven’t found a line that I like yet. Currently on my stradics- 10 lbs test fireline (yes brian..pink)..
curados have 20 lbs test fireline. I was heavily using mono earlier this year, stren in all different lbs test. I wasn’t loosing any fish- but I could feel the bites as well. So, now I am still biting the bit, trying to find my line.

I don’t like fireline, because I lose fish, or rip the hooks through their mouths. And believe it or not, IN ONE day, I lost six new gammy hooks, and six new tungeston bullet sinkers, …breaking off on NEW 20 lbs test fireline. It wasn’t a faulty knot or anything like that either…

Still looking for a “perfect line” I swear, I could buy another boat with all the money I have spent on line..

The yellow suffix is the best “new” mono I’ve tried in quite some time. Strong (very strong) and very user-friendly even in cold weather.

I am in the same boat as you guys, cant seem to settle. I love Big Game and for the price it cant be beat- I bought some of that KVD line and lure stuff and it seems to help with some of the memory especially when you get over 15#. At the recommendation of some on this site I have grown to like the fluoroclear in 20lb for flipping. I also have at least 1 flipping stick with 50# power pro for slop and doubles for flipping. Obviously, Im not good at answering this question but I think I favor the big game especially treated.

I use 30/8 PowerPro when pitching, but I pitch the smaller “Eakins” style and spider jigs on a somewhat softer rod than your average stick.

I did try a couple new lines yesterday, and they both seemed to perform very well on my smallie casting rigs. I used 10# Yo Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft on a Calcutta 100, and I had 10# McCoy’s Mean Green on a Cardiff 100. Both lines behaved very wll and were easy to cast. I could cast that small X-Rap with ease using the McCoy line, (and had some outstanding results on bunch of smallmouth (a couple green ones too)).

I use 50# PowerPro on my spinnerbait/buzzbait rod.

I’m like you guys, always looking for something better.

The search for the perfect line. It seems to never end. I have tried almost everything. The last few years I have been using 20# cxx in green. Unless it is really some nasty stuff(brush mainly) then I will to to 25#. I can’t stand the way braid wraps around brush. Plus….sometimes it is hard to set the hook lightly when you see the lure dissapear…with only 10 feet of line out.

Luke and other using braid UNDER 30# test—

I found out a long time ago that light braid (anything under 30#) does not have good “shock” absorbtion and has a tendancy to break on hooksets. I, and others on this site, have tried using light braid for skipping under dock w/ spinning gear and found that the line can break fairly easy on the hookset. Light braid is GREAT when you wrap around something and/ or put a lot of side-force on it, but the straight shock of the hookset can show it’s weak point.

You’ll learn how to use your drag in a hurry, or just go back to mono…

I’ve tried both the yellow and orange suffix. I really like the yellow. The orange is good to, but not quite as good as the yellow stuff in my opinion.

Thanks Dave, I will give some stronger stuff a try-..But, I have broken off numerous times with strong mono..So I am not sure if it is only “shock absortion”..

Maybe it is the size of my guns..get your tickets now to the gun show!!

HAHA, Luke…one of my roomates has a t-shirt with that saying on it.

On a serious note, I think Dave was talking about braided line and how the higher the lb. test the lease likely you are to snap it on your hook set.

I USE 20 LB TRIPLE FISH FLORUCARBON LINE FOR ALL FLIPPING.
I SEEN SOME NEW STUFF CALL GAMMMA OR SOMETHING BUT THEY WANT 28 DOLLARS FOR LIKE 150 YARDS. IT ALSO IS FLOUROCARBON.

I like 65 pound powerpro, never breaks on the hookset like other lines I’ve tried.

GAMMA GAMMA GAMMA. Ive got gamma Flouro(the $28 dollar stuff) on my flippin worm rod and to date I have not broken off any on a hookset. I’m in same boat as D-Nort, I have tried many including the 30 # braid, and I have lost way to many nice fish due to the shock of the initial hookset. I got a great post from another board about someone talking about this same subject, he uses what he calls the jerk test, but this rotten board doesnt allow you to cut and paste so if someone is looking for a good read, PM me and I will get you the link. From what I have found personally the Gamma has the best impact strength. I have also started using the gamma copolymer and like it so far. Cheap price to, $10 for 17#test.

Sure we do. Use the short-cut keys.

Highlight the text you want. Prese CTRL + C. You just copied.

To paste place your cursor where you want it and press CTRL + V.

Why would anyone do it any other way?

    Hope this helps.

    I have tried:

    Vanish (crap)
    BPS (better but not great)
    P-Line (strong buvery stiff)
    Sugoi (excellent but $$)
Just trying Seaguar now (seems pretty good, but no Sugoi)

Also, I couldn’t cast Sugoi for frist five minutes or so because how it sprung off the reel, but after that it got great.

I would love to try some of the Gamma.

    I think

That Gamma sounds great, but when I stopped at Gander I just couldn’t get myself to chunk out $30.00 for a couple hundred yards with so many other good lines staring at me. That’s probably pretty dumb of me though, because by the time I grabbed a little of this and that I spent 30-40 dallars anyway.

I was at Bass Pro Shops yesterday and decided to check out the Gamma. The biggest it went up to was 14# test…

Hmm. 10lb Trilene XT for skippin’ docks and 30lb Power Pro for pitchin’/flippin’ grass mats/bushes/wood and frogin’/swim-jigin’ pads.

    Thanks,

Vanish is no good IMO. I tried several time to wet and tie a knot and everytime it broke. Sufix is tough and good sensitivity, P-Line Flouro, Power Pro braid.

    Guys’

I sat next to the Gamma booth at the NW Sports show in Minneapolis and had a chance to talk with the. As you are aware there are only a few things that can be change when manufacturing fishing line. But Gamma has incorporated using electromagnetic radiation to alter their line. I’ve worked with x-ray for over 30 years and have seen what radiation does to plastics and glass. The results are usually deteriate of the product. What they tell me is the process was developed and patented by a physicist the retards the deliration of plastics used on the space shuttle. The key is to control the time of exposure to alter the crystal structure of the line to improve its performance. Being the skeptic I am I’ve got to see it to believe it. I’ve got some 10 lb fluorocarbon that I’ll try when the temps go up.

    Big Game 20# flippin/pitchin

i use silicone spray on reels spooled with fluero, cast out before we launch/fish, spray a rag and run the line through when reeling it in. seems to help with less memory. Backed my drags off too, trying to get used to this 17lb Vanish
