We got out for a few hours yesterday. We started off trying some sight fishing for any bedding bass but the sun wasn’t working in our favor and with the recent weather we’ve had lately, just don’t think it’s the right time yet.

One thing is for certain is that there is a TON of baitfish in certain area’s of the pool right now. We found a back pocket that it didn’t matter where you threw, you could see baitfish scattering all over the place. It was interesting to find that the Northerns had taken over the middle parts of the bay (in scattered weeds) and pushed the bass tight into the receding flooded grass along the banks. We found that if we through into open water we would catch Northerns, but as soon as we threw our jigs up onto the mat and drug it over the edge we would get slammed. We didn’t catch any big fish, but the numbers made up for it.

The picture is blurry, but gives you an idea of these monster 14-16″ fish

Nice talkin’ to you yesterday Natureboy

Nice meeting you guys too. My adventure on 8 last night consisted of fishing drop off’s and sand flats for football smallies. In our travels we came acrosse some white bass and cleaned house on them. We boated at least 20 in the 14-18 inch range. These fish are unbelievable fighters. out of my norm I was throwing mostly white shad imataions last night. The water was muddy and bright colors just weren’t the ticket. Didn’t get a chance to fish for any largies but the smallie action was exciting. my partner did catch one bronze back that would have gone three pounds.

See you on the water tonight, good luck with your club T.

I don’t mean to pry, but I was wondering how we actually define the term sand flat??? I think I personally have been throwing that term around loosely in the past. For instance, is it just a flat, any old flat, like those in lakes? Or, is it a specific river term? In other words, when we refer to sand flats are we talking about something in the main channel or major side channels with current?

Slopster, nice report! One question though, where is you pedestal seat in the front? Am I missing it, or do you not use one sometimes?

A lot of us don’t use lean seats. I don’t like them because I feel like when I’m leaning I’m letting my guard down and not prepared for the next strike. I also like the ability to roam around the front deck with no obsticles…

Did I mention it makes my boat faster… .

    yup…what Dave said .

Seriously though, I feel they are in the way. If I need to work the boat on a fish or it goes around my trolling motor, I don’t need to obstacles in my way. I do keep one on board in case my back starts hurting or something…Or if i’m prefishing for pick ups i’ll use it…

g-love, I think of a sand flat as an area, usually of off a secondary point, where the current piles up sand and keeps it a hard bottem. These areas are usually about the size of a garage for me and the best ones are ones with drop offs on the sides. Flats I fish are anywhere from 2-12 feet deep. hope this helps a bit

Yeah, I am with you, most of the time I have to be able to lean on something, or I will be swimming. Especially if there is a chop, I don’t know how anybody would keep from falling in..?

Although, I will say this- we were floating a stretch of the river in our small john boat, we decided to get on further down the river-…put the motor in gear and started moving slowly..my older brother,(it was my dad, gabe, and I) thought he would be cool, and stay standing on top of the casting platform in the front of the boat, and me and my dad were sitting down on buckets or what not. Well sure enough we hit a rock…Dad, and I end up on the floor in the boat, gabe…just fine, still standing …
He claimed “cat like reflexes”- I said whatever,…until a few minutes later…I have a nice musky swing and miss my bait, and THE NEXT second, my brother dives in HEAD first, and comes up with that fish, true story…I have a picture, I will see if I can take a digital of it sometime then post it…then he rubbed in his “cat like reflexes”
