Where are good spots for shore fishing around Onalaska/La Crosse this time of year? I spent a few hours out on Fisherman Rd by the airport but didn’t get a bite. Then a couple hours down on Goose Island and no bites there either. I’m hoping to take my 6-year old out to catch some fish next weekend so any help putting him on fish will be much appreciated.

    MM,

I am a boat owner, but still love to go from shore when I have just a few hours to fish. I’ve had good success fishing from shore at Goose Island the past few springs. I put on a pair of slop boots or waders and walk into some of the areas with shallow water and have caught plenty of LM bass and northerns. This is a good time of the year to go to Goose because the weeds aren’t filled in yet in those shallow areas. I usually throw a shallow running crankbait or spinner bait.

That probably is not the best type of fishing for a 6 year old. For that you might consider fishing from the road near the culverts. I see a lot of kids there with parents bobber fishing. I don’t usually fish there so I’m not sure if the pan fish are in there this early.

    Good luck to you.

There are crappies being caught from the shore in Stoaddard by the boat houses. There will soon be a good gill bite from shore there also. Just before you get into Stoddard (on the North end) there is a parking area.

Also Shady Maple still produces Northern and Bass while casting from shore. There will be a good gill bite starting there soon also.

    Hope this helps

Just south of Goose Island, about a mile I would guess? It involves a decent walk along the tracks to most places, don’t know if that plays into your plans with a 6 year old or not.

Thanks. I’ll give those spots a try. My boy is learning to use a spinning reel so it should be fun
