I was talking to the new Dept. Manager at the La Crosse Gander Mtn., and he informed me the newly arrived Sweet Beaver plastics by Reaction Innovations will be pulled from the shelves courtesy of a women’s rights group.

Apparently, they feel the names aren’t appropriate. (To that I say get a life.)

I’m not exactly sure what can be done to stop something like this, but I think it stinks out loud.

I think it’s sad a group like that can gain such leverage to force a companies hand. I’d like to know how many of those women’s rights activists are regular customers of Gander Mtn….

I believe one of the best ways to support Gander would be to go and buy the Reaction Innov. products. I have a hard time believing Gander Mtn. would pull a very successful product.

Don’t forget to stock up on BFT plastics either….

The only answer that I have is that it must have come from some dirty minded women, that do not have anything else to do.

I heard they are already pulled. Haven’t been out there lately to know for sure.

Typical of today’s society. Where their arguments with the names or with the women on the packaging?

What really bothers me is that Gander made the decision to pull out.

I would argue that 80-90% of Gander Customers are Men….What does Gander have to gain by this? NOTHING if you ask me…

Would it hurt them financially to leave the products in the store? NO…These women won’t have any buying power at Gander, nor political power for that matter (if applicable)

As a Pro-Staffer of Gander Mt. I’m disappointed.

As far as Reaction Innovations is concerned…their products will become low in supply and still have high demand…which means MORE BEAVERS SOLD than a cheap trick in Vegas.

    I LOVE THE SWEET BEAVER!!!

I hope they left the “Smallie Beavers” on the pegs
About the only one that might find that name offensive,
    is a male Beaver

So now I suppose PETA is going to start screaming
about the “Ugly Otter”, and how that makes Otters
    “feel” depressed.

I have something for all of those overly sensitive types

If Gander caves to this, I’ll take my business to someplace
that has a backbone. Incidentally, I already have a good
supply of “SWEET BEAVERS”, of the soft plastic type…Don’t
waste your money on the California #420 color.

    from Jim’s other half….

I have to say I am happy to see that. I was disgusted to see some of their trixie series plastics Jim brought home a couple weeks ago. I thought it was some gag at first with the lame packaging with the sexy chick on the front, but I was even more annoyed to hear it was for real and came from Sportsman’s Warehouse. I told him there has to be less offensive lures he could use that work just as well.

Most of you who know me know I am pretty laid back. Conservative, yes, but not some crazy activist. I would have to be laid back to let Jim be gone fishing as much as he is. But if I was offended by it, I’m sure plenty of other normal women were too.

And yes, I probably spend as much in the sporting goods stores as he does. Infact if you go in at Christmas or Fathers Day or any of those other holidays, it is full of women buying gifts and gift certificates. If you want to offend women and keep us from buying you gifts there, we will just go back to giving you ugly dress shirts and ties.

Can anyone get ahold of this group. It would be great to here the other side of the story. Might also be a hoot to argue the logic of this with them.

Better keep these gals out of the hunting isles. Just imagine what they would do to the deer and other scents. So much for canned tuna also.

Opps. Can I say canned tuna on this site?

I just got off the phone with the folks at Berkley and they are going to start pulling all power worms over 9 inches off the shelves as they intimidate me.

    Question for you all.

    A simple question……to be honest.

If you had a 5, 8, or 11 year old daughter, would you let her take them to school for show-tell?

What if your daughter was really big into fishing and she liked how the Sweet Beaver’s performed. What if she wanted to carry those baits to the fishing peir to go fishing at the age of 13?

Again, what if this was your daughter. Would you let her?

If not, then don’t complain about Gander pulling the product, when Gander represents all ages and both sexes with hunting/fishing/camping……

    Just being devil’s advocate!

If I had a daughter that wanted to use them, I would take them out of the original packaging and put them in a sandwhich bag labeled “Flippin Craw”

If I had an 8 year old daughter and she knew the innuendo behind the name, I would take a good look in the mirror

After reading the posts and trying to understand the issue. I have not seen them but it sounds to me that it is not the name that bothers them, but the packaging, Is this correct? If it is the packaging then I would say to pull them from the shelve and have the company come up with a different package. Or put them into a novelty store. They had the same problem with Bad Frog beer.

I would guess most 5, 8, or 11? year olds don’t understand what the beaver represents…so as the parent (if they got it) it would be their decision to make.

    It’s adults that are perverse.

Don’t like playboy’s? don’t buy it…..don’t like the sweet beaver? don’t buy it…but don’t prevent me from buying it.

i thought this was a capitalist society?

Bomber, have you seen them? Its not the name that is offensive, it is the packaging and the picture on the front. Even my 6 year old daughter would know that if she saw it. I sure don’t want her seeing that Daddy has that in his boat.

Slop- last I saw, they didn’t have Playboy at Gander either. Nobody said you can’t buy them, but Gander doesn’t need to stick their neck out for bad PR either. There are plenty of other lures on the market to fill their shelves. Thats simple business 101. The lure must not be that good if they need a gimmick like that to sell it.

I personally think the name is hilarous. I haven’t bought any of “sweet beavers” products, no need for them.
You have made the activists point for them,”what the beaver represents”. If we all agree it represents what is laying between a females legs then maybe it is offensive…not to me, but I can see how it may offend some. Mmmmm….sweet beaver!

It was the hottest lure on the market in ’05…..It must have been catching fish.

We’ll discuss this over the poker table

I would be more offended if I had an eight year old son that wanted to buy them because he would basically be giving in to society’s theory that men will buy anything where sex is the main marketing point.

As far as the packaging goes, I hope no one let’s their daughters go into the toy section of Target or Wal-Mart. Have you ever seen a Bratz doll or Bikini Barbie. Basically the same thing, just a different target market and that’s what turns it from acceptable to disgusting.

THE SELLING PHRASE IS GET SOMPUSSIE…THIS IS AT MAJOR CHAINS. I DONT THINK THIS BAIT IS OVER THE TOP.

from Francis’s (fishanytime) better half –

My first reaction was that these women need to get a life but after seeing Reaction Inovation’s website (http://reactioninnovations.com/) I am starting to think they have a point. I say keep the name but change the package. The also have a lure called The Big Unit. I wonder what is on that package.

Not picking on you Bomber, but you answered my point. Point being you don’t want your daughter to see it, or as a parent, possibly be stuck with trying to answer questions at a tender age, that shouldn’t be running through a young child’s mind.

    So, with that said.
Why should I allow exposure of borderline “pornographic” type subject matter, to my 12 year old daughter at a fishing/hunting/camping store that promotes to ALL ages and both sexes?

If it isn’t a big deal, then I say let it go. If it isn’t that big of a deal, then I also say to don’t be a hypocrite and expose them to your children and use them when you take your minister fishing with you. OR would that be embarrassing????

By the way, if you fish tournaments, make sure that when you sign autographs, to hand out packages of these to your fan base of children. Or would that be in poor taste?

    Yes,
I’m being sarcastic, but my point is clear……..

As a teacher guys, I can see their point, sort of. There is a problem here, but I think it is more on the society as a whole, not just this company. Like it was said earlier most ads have some sort of suggestive material. I am by no means, hyperconservative, but SOME things need to change. The bait is awesome, and I own a bunch, but they do not need sex to sell them, right?

    These are just my opinions

I am the proud father of three daughters. As their dad–if that package is a threat in some manner-I have not done my job. I am tired of people wanting lawmakers and and the general public to live their lives and parent their children for them. Raise your kids right and no packaging can tear that down. If it prompts questions you are not ready to answer–chances are they have already asked them to somebody else and you missed your chance to be the voice of reason in their life that you should be. They will be exposed to many things you wont’t be comfortable with–teach them how to handle it–don’t shelter them into being unaware of the world.
