    Wisconsin bass regs 3/21/2006
The Wisconsin Conservation Congress and Dept. of Natural Resources will hold its statewide sessions April 10, at which a number of proposed regulations will be voted on. However, aside from votes, the Conservation Congress is also seeking public input on a number of bass-related topics. Among those are whether anglers would support:

A closure of smallmouth-bass fishing until June 30.

Establishment of a catch-and-release smallmouth season on Lake Michigan and Green Bay from the first Saturday in May through June 20.

A reduction of the Lake Michigan and Green Bay daily limits from five to three smallmouths.

The Conservation Congress is an independent organization of Wisconsin citizens elected in their own counties by local county residents. They represent their county’s interest on all natural resources issues on a local and statewide basis. To learn more about the Congress, Click Here .

Why the change? from what I’ve seen the SM population is in great shape. Look like it’s aimed at tournaments.

You know, it seems like we are getting bombarded from every direction constantly. The US Fish and Wildlife, this deal slop is posting, cities always trying to put in more no wakes, etc. I guy can’t even keep up.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong but I believe Gary Nault is behind this idea. He doesn’t want to see spawners picked off their beds and I assume with the bag limit reduction; he’d rather not have tournaments out their either. I can’t imagine their being a lot of guys out there keeping 5 bass limits for the frying pan so its gotta be aimed at the tournaments.

We would like to know if the public would still support a rule change to provide more protection to
spawning bass in the Green Bay and Lake Michigan waters off Door County, in light of the new
biological information above. Please contact Mike Toneys (920-746-2864; [email protected]
or Tim Kroeff (920-746-5107; [email protected] at the Sturgeon Bay DNR office with your thoughts,
concerns and comments. We appreciate your interest.

Most of what you guys sy is right on. Some people what to do away with the tourneys run up there. I wonder how much money the communities would loose if the Sturgeon Bay Open is no more…And like some of you say the smallie population is not hurting at all…..but hey, I’m all for making a fishery better, but this may not be the way to go…think they could come up with something better….or am I wrong…only my 2 cent….

phishirman, I don’t know I would go as far as saying it is all Gary Nault. I talked to Gary last week at the Milwaukee Sport Show and he is fishing the open this year along with running his tournament for Door County residence.

My brother who lives in Sturgeon Bay said the tournament brings 1 million dollars to the Door County area

Now that I think about it, I do remember that he did have some issues. I think they came about when Gary was no longer in charge of the open. I guess its just hard to believe if he is pushing this that he would fish the open and also run his own tournament that time of year.
