I have much better success with swim jigs when I am fishing rivers, and less when fishing lakes. Is it just me, or has anyone else found this to be true? If so, any reasons why swimming works better on the rivers.

Natural colors from my experiences seem to work better on lakes than rivers. On the river here, darker colors work better like blacks, blues, etc…..When the water is stained.

On lakes like Mille Lacs, lighter colors like pearl white with offsetting/accents excel. In clearer lakes, fish can see colors farther away and swim jigs aren’t always a reaction but become a presentation.

IN ONE FULL SEASON OF USING THEM. I SEEMED TO HAVE HAD EQUAL LUCK ON LAKES, SOME SMALLER NORTHERN WI. LAKES, AND ON THE MISS. I CANT SAY THAT THE PERCENTAGES HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT.

With any bait, you match the forage for success. In MN, certain lakes have forage that others do not. The river and a certain few lakes have shad, others do not. I’m sure the primary swimming forage (vs. craws) varies from a lake to lake, or atleast region to region. “Most” of the time, the same swim jig on the river isn’t the same one needed for a particular lake.

Not a swim jig pro or anything, but to me this theory holds true no matter the bait.

I have had great success with swim jigs on the lakes. Fishing the slop has been one area I found that there is no difference from the river. Same presentation styles I used on the river work well on the lakes in this cover.

Inside weedlines on the lakes is the other primary area I have found success with a swim jig. Parallel casting the bank for reaction strikes on postspawn fish has worked well.

    Good Luck!!
