I been reading the boards for quite awhile and was wondering if anybody fishes around Harpers or Lansing. It’s the closest part of the river to me. I went last weekend and caught a few lmb in the backwaters. I not very familar with fishing the Mis river and was wondering how to locate wingdamns. I heard that there is a bouy at the end of them and can you actually see the current break. Thanks any info will be greatly appreciated and this site is excellent.

I’m no expert and I’m not familiar with the area you’re referring to but I can share what I’ve learned recently on wingdams, as far as locating them.
When traveling the main channel of the river, there are red and green channel markers. These markers are typically placed off the end of a wingdam. The dam is controlling current rate by pushing the water back toward the main channel. This push creates a definitive line across the current flow. It’s not always a bubbling, just a fine line drawn across the water surface, indicating a current disturbance. They are really visible when a south wind pushes the surface water up the current. When the south wind is absent, a trick to find them is to use your boat to “push” water at them, much like the south wind would do, and look for that line to appear. It may take more than one try so be patient with it. Until you see them clearly, it can be somewhat tricky.
Well, if you must find them alone, this should get you started. Best advice I have is to hook up with someone that has river experience, particularly in your area of interest, and go with them for a day to pick up some basic knowledge. Best of luck and good fishin’ to ya!
July 26, 2001 at 9:00 am #232017I used to fish down in that area…. talk to the local bait/tackle shop owners they will clue you in…. there are maps that can be obtained for free as well……
I used to deal with Jim Everett at Everetts sporting goods in waukon… he knew quite a bit…. but Im sure other guys down there are good too….July 26, 2001 at 11:22 am #232020Very recently there was a link posted to the COE page that has the pool maps. They have the wingdams on them. If you can’t find the post, the Iowa dnr web site also has pool 9.
click on fish&wildlife, fish&fishing, Where to fish, etc. It should be obvious from there.
If the water level is low, I don’t know if I would push water toward wingdams with my boat – you might end up using the “finding wingdams with your lower unit” method. Typically current is strong enough that anything within 5 feet of the surface is readily visible.

Let me clarify the push method. You stay downstream of the marker buoy and enter the area below the wingdam at a shallow angle and then just motor a half circle away from it. Just don’t feel the need to get close to the dam. The waves will get there and you can view the disturbance from the safety of the channel. Danger factor doesn’t seem real high to me when using common sense with marker locations.
July 26, 2001 at 4:35 pm #232050Thanks guys for the help. I will give it a try. I noticed last weekend a current break running with a buoy but didn’t really notice any great depth change other than a shallow boulder sticking up. Maybe I was’nt even on a wing damn. I am really new to the river so I’m sorry for all the questions.
July 26, 2001 at 5:01 pm #232052Don’t apologize for being smart enough to ask questions…………..no such thing as a stupid question and yours are welcome here anytime!
July 26, 2001 at 11:52 pm #232090The thing that I worry about is the unmarked wingdams. Not all of them have bouys, at least down here. The DNR and COE both have maps that show the dams. They’re good enough that you can look around at the channel and the islands, markers, etc and tell where you are on the map.

April 1, 2002 at 4:12 pm #240135The only spot in harpers that you have to worry about is the entrance to Mud Hen. The rest of the entire area is free from wingdams. If you stay in the markers on the main channel you will be fine. Lansing is another story.
