Have you tried slops w/buzz propellor?

Years ago there was a big movement where fishermen were using a similar technique.
The just of it is as follows:
Take a small plastic buzzer blade and thread it on your line. Next place 2 red glass beads to keep the blade up the line a ¼ to 1/2 inch. The followed this with a 4/0 hook and a lizard in there favorite color. This bait was a good cross between a slop frog and a buzzbait. It worked well in areas that did not have a discernable canopy.
I have never subscribed to this style of fishing however people I respect use it religiously. As many on this board know I am meticulous in presentation and adhering to mother natures spectacles. This is probably my biggest weakness. –grin –
Anyway. I have seen them used and will attest that they can catch fish.Added note:
I will warn you that there are psychological and financial addictions that can easily overtake your ability to reason and make good fundamental decisions in the winter. I am not sure the medical name for this ailment but I suffer with it every year. Be aware. Here are some of the symptoms….
1. Sudden compulsive lure purchasing decisions.
2. You find yourself watching strike king infomercials and mistaking them for quality television.
3. You start to believe wholeheartedly that the new “what’cha majiggle” will single handedly win you many tournaments.
4. That if you use spike it color dip on all your baits the fish will automatically find them.
5. You just purchased the Banjo or Helicopter lure kit from Wal-Mart.
6. You have used yarn and thread to tie rattles to just about everything you own.
7. You are soaking all your baits in KNB.
8. You are comparing the taste between Berkly Powerbait and what’s still in your livewell.
9. You are seriously considering hitching up the boat and driving south to find open water…You all can see that I am suffering from delusional thought… I pray spring gets here soon…
January 20, 2003 at 3:24 pm #250710I have tried the baits you mentioned. The only one I have is the one I found. I found it on a big patch of slop on Lake Onalaska. I do not know if the original owner lost it on a fish or hated it so much he chucked it into the nether regions of slop from wence it came. Personally I have used it a few times. I do not like them. They seem to collect alot of moss and weeds.
Look at it this way. Most slop lures do not have moving parts.i.e. spinning blades. Could this be for a reason? These 3 bladed props spin and collect weeds more than they collect fish as far as I am concerned.
They do however work where the slop is not so heavy and constrictive. Almost like a buzzbait around the outer edge of weedbeds.
I prefer to use Snag-Proof Tournament Frogs. Other than that I like to swim big tubes over weeds. No moving parts! I beleive rattles are a must.Good luck.
January 22, 2003 at 5:45 pm #250825One of my fishing partners enjoys using a prop in front of the frog when we are fishing slop that has some open water in or around it. I have seen some awesome hits on it when the conditions are right and the fish want something moving fairly fast. We have also noticed at times that it will get the fish interested in other presentations and I’ll get more hits on a tournament frog as he works the prop. We always like to try in prefishing to work baits that either compliment each other as these combos seem to or work baits that have seemingly no correlation to each other at all.
January 22, 2003 at 6:24 pm #250832Thanks guys, lots to think about. Let’s see my tourney partner said ditch the tricks, BF said it isn’t very good in the tough stuff and sends a solid vote for SLTourney frogs, basspack opens up a little window of new opportunity.
Oh did I mention my tourney partner said he was delusional(imagine that), and my wife says I can only buy one if I buy food for the kids first.
Jeremy once the shakes stop I will be much better. I’ll buy the kids food and who knows if I behave well the Bucketmouth Fairy might let me find one somebody threw away……sigh…….
SERIOUSLY guys thanks for the info. I am curious though, because I hardly ever throw a musky bait that doesn’t have a propellor on it and 11 years of testing “Everything” for musky makes that category of lures really stick out. Just wondering if it will carry over into another predator.
2riversPosts: 26January 23, 2003 at 1:08 am #250873I have had a few days when I was able to get fish to hit a spoon buzzer hard, when they weren’t very interested in other baits. Have had poor success with buzzing texas rigged plastics so far. I have a couple old Lindy buzzing spoons but haven’t seen them for years. Nemire makes buzzing spoons for sale in BPS. Where these have worked the best is in lakes with fairly clear water and relatively deep weedlines, compared to the river. I think it will bring fish up better than less obnoxious baits. Sometimes. If weeds allow.
