Just curious what kind of line is everybody’s favorite for your baitcaster & spinning reels. I experimented with some different lines this past year and always ended up going back to fireline. I would like to get some ideas so I can limit the types of line I try out this coming season. Thanks.

It all depends on what the presentation is, but for baitcasters, I am almost strictly using the Cajun Red Lightning. I have found it to be very abrasion resistant and that it has a very low stretch factor.

About the only spinning rigs I use are for skipping docks, so I have been using Power Pro for the past three seasons. I tried Spiderwire, Fireline, and Gorilla Braid, but I came our preferring the Power Pro. It doesn’t seem to fray or discolor as badly as the others.

I won’t use the Cajun on spinning rigs. It’s got too much memory and I end up with bad twist problems. My buddy uses it on spinning rigs, but he won’t got over 10 lb test and uses 3000 size reels. Says he has no problems. I use smaller reels like 2000 size since I don’t need to hold a lot of line for docks.

When I am using small jigs, I prefer a baitcaster and use small diameter Power Pro for sensitivity. Some guys would say I’m nuts jig worming with braid, but I outfish my partner in every tourney where we jig worm, and he’s an excellent jig worm fisherman.

    There’s my ramble.

This is a great post. I use power pro on my spinning only (boy does it work on fishing docks), but on only a few rods. The rest I use Silver Thread. I used to guide alot and I was respooling at least once a month and boy did that get spendy with others so I started looking at others and found silver thread to be cheaper BUT better. Now I fish more tournaments that guide and I still use silver thread. I don’t use anything but mono on my bait casters. Power Pro really helps with sensitivity on live bait rigs, go over rocks and it feels like lighting bolts up the hand (oh now you got me going how long until soft water? ).

6 or 8 lb. stren mono when I’m angling for smallmouth (spinning) I like Fireline to closed loop swivil then florocarbon for current fishing to stay on or near the bottom, but my experience with Fire is to stay above 10lb. prefer 14 anything less it seems to lose longivity strength for me. Haven’t tried PowerPro myself good luck fishing!

i use either 15lb Big Game or 15lb P Line Fluoroclear on my baitcasters for just about everything but slop and for that i’ll use either 30 or 50 lb Spider Wire Stealth. Spinning gear mainly consists of 14/6 Fireline in stained water. If there is a hint of clarity I’ll use a 4 or 5 foot Fluoroclear leader. Gin clear water and I’ll spool up with 6 or 8 lb Seguar Fluorocarbon

Jones in pretty much hit the nail on the head. P-Line Floroclear. I do not use braid unless I am Rattin which is not very often. P-Line Floroclear on everything else I own.

PowerPro for slop, P-Line CXXX-Xtra Strong for pitchin and flippin, and on my crankbiat rod, Silver Thread Excaliber on my topwater rod, Flourocarbon (still looking for a great brand) for C-Rigging, P-Line Flouroclear for spinning rods, Flouroclear or a Flourocarbon for any general use rods.

I use Power Pro 6/20 on spinning reels for flukes and skipping plastics. I use 8-10lb P-line for cranks and 20lb Seguar for flipping . I do use some stren but mostly for night fishing , I need the floresent blue for my black light.

I’m on my 3rd year of PowerPro on baitcasters. Tough stuff, no memeory. I’m looking to try Berkly Vanish this year for no other reason than I keep seeing their promo everywhere I go. Had a great time with some finicky bass last year on floro.

I got two questiosn for you guys, one is why do you guys use a different line for topwaters, other than the P-Line? I used it last summer for that and liked it. Second, what is your favoriate florocarbon?

On your first question, I just found Excaliber really seems to float well, and it’s properties seem to make it easier fo me to get the topwater action I want with than it is with P-Line.

I am interested in the 2nd question as well. I have used BPS (OK), Berkely (crap), and P-Line (OK, a bit better than BPS). I know there is the expensive Japanese brand that Champman uses that is supposed to be really great, but I can’t think of the name right now.

Thanks Moss for the response, are you using the old Excalibur or the new stuff?

Hey Moss. You could have just said, Flouro lines sink.

You are corect. I completely forgot about the topwater bite.

    JC:

Why speak simple when I can draw it out and try to confuse the issue???

I don’t think the Green Box P-Line has much if any Flouro, but it still seems to ride the water different than the Exclaibur. You ever use the Green Box P-Line? It is much stiffer, but I have found you can also drop down 1 or 2 sizes (ie 20 lb Flouroclear to 17 or 15 pound CXX-Xtra Strong) and get the same strength and more abrasion resistance. It is a much stiffer line, but I kinda got use to that for some things and it doesn’t bother me, but I think for some it would. I really like the 10 pound and 8 pound stuff for crankin, and after trying flouro for pitching last year I went back to the P-Line.

    BB:

I didn’t know there was a difference in the line.

I had the old black box stuff in a big roll until last year, then I bought the newer packaged stuff (orange label I think?). Can’t say I noticed much difference.

In regards to your second question…. I believe the line you are talking about is Sougi (spelling????). This is by far my favorite florocarbon. It is so much better than P-line, but it is also a lot more expensive. I believe it is about $23 for 90 yards.

Never throw swim jigs without it
