Dave,
I am curious regarding your “lack of participation” comment. I visit/fish the Winona area 2X a month or so, and have fished a few tournaments there in the past. Anyway, how many people had signed up for this one.
I called there office to pre-register on Weds. and the lady said only 3 were pre-registered. That is weak but you wonder how many would have signed up the morning of. I think Brecka’s tournament didn’t have much for pre-entrie, but had 16 show up the morning of. I know thats not huge but its enough to pay a couple spots anyway.
Dave Cindrich, I think the cancellation was pre-mature. And the lady I talked to when I called the Ill. # told me she thought the water was going to be too high too. That for sure isn’t the case. It would be even within two feet of flood stage. I was looking foward to it but oh well. What is the minumum you need to hold a tournament.
A few years (perhaps 5) ago a friend of mine organized a Walleye tournament out of Winona. It was extremely well organized and publicized, and there were 60 boats entered. The rules were great, like only one boat per Wingdam, and everything went off like without major problems. It was in September, albeit the weather was extremely hot. The event lasted two days and although a few pros were in it, two brothers from Winona, in seperate boats caught walleye over 10 LBS. Nonetheless, 24 of the 60 boats had no legal Walleye, but everyone had a great time.
I suspect, based on the success of that tournament, the City (perhaps JC’s) decided to take over and since then everthing they have tried to organize have been a disaster. My Dad lives in Winona, is 87 year old, so I visit at least 2X monthly and always go fishing. My point is Winona’s Government has got so screwed up, and it involves everything from tournaments of this nature to no wake zones in second channels.
Finally, because I often frequent the West End Bait Shop in Winona, the lack of info regarding the Steamboat Days Tournament is astounding. I wrote the organizer regarding some of the above issues and, of course, there has been no response.
You mentioned three people had signed up. Heck I personally could get five in a single day. Winona’s efforts at a Steamboat Days tournament and most other river efforts have literally fallen into the brain dead category.
Sorry to get so fired up abut this issue, but anyone that has a normal IQ, knows a few fisherman and likes the Mississippi would have done a much better job. And the high water stuff is BS.
I don’t want you to think I’m bashing. I was just stating what I knew. Dave is a good guy and I’m friends with him. All I was getting at is that it was too bad nobody pre-registered. 2fishy4U, If you knew 5 teams to sign up you shoulda got them pre-registered. Might have been enough to keep it rolling.
Living in Wisconsin, but raised in Winona I probably shouldn’t even comment. However, I do get to Winona a few times a month and this tournament was very poorly publicized.
One last question, is Dave a fisherman???
This was not a division event,no points on the line, last year when we brought the MN.division to Winona we had 17 boats, this was less than half our normal field.
I called everyone that fished with us this year for North Star and came up with only five boats that were going to sign up at the dock, with presigned that would be 8,4 maybes boats,no calls no e-mails,I put a lot of work into this event and was a little set back by the lack of intrest in the event.
As far as the comments about the lack of promotion. I think any one looking to fish tournaments have many venues to seek info, and Team Supreme uses many of them.
Eroningon, your queastion about how many boats does it take to hold an event, there is no min. last year we headed down to Winona with 11 presigned boats, you all know the majorty of the field would have been Team Supreme anglers.
There is one more event in Winona Aug.10 and two more out of Alma so if you are looking to compete on the river against the best river teams on the river, put up or shut up,
And don’t insult me by questioning if I’m an angler, have I been fishing many tournaments,NO,I’m to busy running 13 events this year.
2fishey4you,when MN. division went to Winona last year the river creasted the day after the event.high water does effect how many boats sign up at the dock, last year we had info. at WEST END BAIT and had only two locals fish with us,there has been info.out there about this tourney since early Jan.but thank you for your two cents.
By the way we just held an event in Winona 2 weeks ago.
Maybe just maybe anglers spent the day with there familys for fathers day or other obligations.

I was going to fish this, but the in-laws came to town for Airfest this weekend, and combined with Father’s Day, it kep me at the homestead. Father’s Day is kinda a tough day, though I think the MSBC in La Crosse had a good turnout yesterday.
Dave,
appreciate the reply. It just amazes me the folks in Winona would not show a bit more interest.
Thanks
It bothers me too. People try to run nice tournaments for us and then we have crappy turnouts, the tournaments are gone and then everyone will whine we don’t have a good circuit here.
