i am not a bass fisherman by any means. don’t no much about them other than they are A LOT easier to catch then those darn walleye this time of year. recently i took a trip through the backwaters around winona looking for some large mouth. caught a bunch but most of them looked pretty small to me (all between 7-12″). my friend did catch one pretty good one that topped the scale at 4 pounds even. i couldn’t convince him to through it back because it was the biggest bass of his life and he wants to mount it. this fish does look pretty large compared to all the others we caught but will he be laughed at when he brings it into the taxidermist? what is considered to be a big largemouth anyway . like i said, i’ve never fished much for them so i haven’t a clue.

Generally speaking, any largemouth on the Mississippi River over 4 lbs is a nice fish, however, it’s not a trophy. The Minnesota state record is close to nine pounds, but I’d say if you’re looking to mount one, anything over six pounds is worth it in my book.

Alot depends also on the trip. I mounted a black duck a couple of years ago because we put about a 200 yard crawl on them to get close enough, and everytime I look at it, I remember that hunt.

Otherwise, 4 pounders aren’t all that uncommon on the river. 5 pounders used to be, but are getting more numerous. 6+ is a trophy.

Heck, I don’t think the taxidermist should laugh if he wants to mount a 2 pounder. It’s his fish and his money!!!
