I will be spending the weekend and two days up on the mighty Mississippi (Megregor Area). I would like to get into some good Smallmouth Bass fishing while I am there. I have had some small trips up to the river to get comfortable with my surroundings, but I have not done any serious fishing. I was wondering if anybody can give me some tips on catching these river Bronze Backs. I have been reading the fishing Reports and they say Main Channel along the rocks with Crankbaits, that description sounds pretty vague.

I will be fishing in my Bass boat so any tips on boat control and fishing in the main current would be great. If you have any tips shoot them out to me, should I focus my fishing in the main channel or the sloughs. any suggestions would be great!

Fishing around Prairie Du Chien is going well right now. Finding grass or wood with current around is a good bet. Also points will be holding some fish once the water get’s down. For lures, I would go with cranks, spinnerbaits and plastics. When will you be down fishing.

I will be up there Sunday through Tuesday Aug 11th – 13th. We will be staying at Pike Peaks Campground. If you have any suggestions for other Campgrounds in the area that would be great too!

The other campground in Prairie Du Chien that I know of is Big River Campground. What kind of boat you running? I will done there this weekend and then for the next week.

Mcgregor is a little town in Ioaw that is a little south of Prairie Du Chien.

Could someone tell me about the whereabouts of Busse lake on the Prairie Pool. I think that is how you spell it. I was told it was on the southern half? Thanks…..

South end of the pool. Its about 200 yards north of the dam on the iowa side. IF you find the boat ramp in guttenburg you are there.

Bussey is the backwater right above the lock. If you’re heading out of Guttenberg to the North on 52, there’s a sign for the ramp; from what I remember, you cross the tracks and you’re there.

If you go to this link you can see it, it’s right between town and the residential island.

As far as your trolling motor goes- I have a 17 foot ranger and had a 45 lb thrust motorguide which will probably do ok short term even in the current at this time of year. During high water you have little to no chance with that.
I upgraded to a 74 lb minn kota for the current, but what i used to do was hang close to shore and parallel the rocks while moving slowly upstream on setting 3-4-or 5. After a few hours of battery drain it was usually backwater time, or more of a slipping technique about 15 feet out where i would cast into the rocks upstream as i floated down and use the motor to slow/control my drift. That probably scares some fish but works allright. good luck.
