Hey Jason,
I’ll bet the guys on this site could fill a whole encylopedia with information on worms. As intimidating as that sounds, what it means is that a lot of different worms will work for you.
I like having a few different colors: black, green, smoke, purple, red. It depends on water clarity, and on some lakes the Bass have a preference for one color or another. You have to experiment.
Most of the time I’m using a worm that is about 6 inches long. If you’re on the wrong side of a cold front or the water is colder, a 4 inch worm might work better. Personally I haven’t had much luck with worms longer than 6 inches. Culprit makes a good worm, and this year I’m going to experiment more with the Berkley power bait stuff.
If I’m going to texas rig a worm, I like to use a 3/0 Tru-turn hook, or some kind of hook that rotates in the fishes mouth. I really like rigging up a jig-worm. Get some 1/8 and 1/4 ounce mushroom head jigs. Cut the head end of the worm off so it’s flat, and thread it onto the jig. Leave the hook exposed. It doesn’t work well in slop but if you’re working crisp weeds like Cabbage you can snake it right through.
I’m sure the boys will chime in with a million more suggestions. Have fun!
