The smallies are tearing it up! Good numbers to be had with some deep-bellied piggies coming to the boat as well.

Here’s the latest from James Holst –> Pool 4 Bass Report – 7/22/02

    Good fishin’,

    Question on the superdoos?

    How do you rig em?
    How do you work em?

Just like standard tube baits? Or are there some special tricks with them.

    MossBoss,

The superdoo is rigged the same way you would thread on a twister tail or ring worm. The doo has a solid body and is not hollow like a tube jig is. You can fish it the same way you fish all plastic baits for bass. Crawl it, jig it or swim it! It’s all effective at one point and time.

Oh, I almost forgot it’s great in the colder months vertical jigging for walleye and sauger. Some days they will just knock the snot out of um when nothin’ else is producing.

One of my favortie ways using them is going weightless. When they are casted out the slow fall will make the tentacles dance all over inticing the bass. I have also used then Carolina rigging and Texas Rigging. A small 1/8 oz or 1/16 works real well also. I have had a ball all spring and summer with them. Just remember the lighter the better action you get.

The best way I found to work them the other day was to simply rig them like a twister tail onto a very light jig and let them drift with the current and not putting hardly any action into working the bait. If you can feel a slight snag coming just lift your rod till you are over the snag and then let it continue to drift with the current. The less action you apply to the superdoo the better it seems to work. When you apply action to the bait it forces the tentacles to form together. But by not applying action to the bait the tentacles move more freely simply from the current and from the jig drifting downstream and bumping the rocks or debris down below. They are really easy to use.

OK guys, you’ve convinced me to try some. What colors would you recommend trying first for the late summer fall for bass?

I have been using Mustard with a green or black sparkle, emerald, appleseed, red and two tone orange. My personal favorites is the appleseed color and two tone frog color, not sure of the names.

Boy is the proof in that pudding! I was out tonight with my 4 year old daughter just hoping to get a nice fish for her to reel in and we got one real nice one on a superdoo.

It was crazy. All this talk about superdoos reminded me to give one a try tonight and the only one I had in the box was a purple/white one that harijig sent me this spring. We set up on the inside of a wingdam close to shore where there is a big tree stuck on the wingdam and I casted out along the tree. My daughter’s line was all tangled up so I set mine down to help here for a few seconds and when I picked my rod back up there was a fish on. A good one too! So I played it out for a second, handed the rod to my daughter and let her giggle and reel it in. It was awesome. That thing put on an arial acrobatic extravaganza. So we got it in the boat. Then I noticed that the smallie had it so injested it actually swallowed it. I got the jig out and measured the smallmouth at 17″. Man that fish ate it! We snapped a quick photo and released the fish and it swam away in good shape. So what did I learn from this? Smallies love these things and you dont have to do anything special while fishing them heck my rod was sitting on the deck and the fish still hit it. I was watching Jarrad at Everts the other day and all he would do is just cast it out and hold it only reeling when the line would go slack. You cant hardly fish them wrong. Im a believer now!

Did you get your lil’ gal to hold that fish for the camera?! That would make a really sweet pic. If you did, load ‘er up when you get it developed.

    Way nice Steve

I’m gonna have to get me some of those superdoos. What type of a jig were you using?

Just a black 1/8 ounce jig. I took a photo on one of those disposable cameras. As soon as the film is all shot up on that camera I will get it developed. I have had that camera sitting in my boat for awhile so hopefully the film is still in good shape.
