BC and I were sitting at lunch today talkin’ game plans for after work fishing, and he so graciously reminded me that I hadn’t caught a Bass yet this year. I told him that if I were to catch a Bass today, It would make 2 years in a row that I had caught my first Bass on April 4th.
Well we got on the water about 4:15. We had tremendous wind to deal with today. Easily 20+ mph w/gusts in the 30’s….We didn’t feel like battling the wind so we headed up near the dredge hole as it was the place w/the least wind.
We didn’t really work the hole to much, but worked the West side of the bank all the way down. Cranks, spinners, X-Raps…nothing going. We didn’t work the other side b/c there were some boaters over there and we didn’t want to crowd the water.
We were about ready to leave when we decided brave the wind a bit and work a wind blown bank and point. As we were trolling over there, I called WINGDAM, who had been out there most of the day. I got the report from him and just as I hung up the phone, WHAAP, I got my first strike….It felt like a good fish, and she was staying down…..then BC almost got a face full of treble as the lure came flying up at him . I couldn’t believe it I sat there awestruck for a minute, then decided to move off and come back to that spot in a bit.
I started Casting again and noticed my crank wasn’t swimming correctly. As I grabbed ahold of it, I noticed the entire back was split. That Monster Bass had broken the lure . Well We went back to that same spot about 10 minutes later and I threw in a Brush Hawg…TAP TAP TAP…then i set the hook like a man w/a Mission….Wasn’t that Big, but sure as shizzle, I got my first bass again on April 4th.
BC through in right after me and WHAP, Another Bass on an X-RAP. We had a few more boat side shakers, but there was definetly fish stacked in that spot. @2ft of water, sitting up near a brush pile right on a point w/90 degree bend and the wind blowing right over it.
The weather isn’t going to change much from today ’til tomorrow, so i think we might have some insight on what to look for!
Above is the fish that kept my April 4th Streak Alive
