Well, actually, we did OK on the smallies, but the largemouth just killed us. Fished 5a Saturday and Sunday morning, zero BITES from largemouths in the backwaters, only 2 northerns, 1 smally (from a weededge in 2 feet and no current) and 1 doggie. We just could not find any. Maybe they are on the beds, I will admit I just can’t find bass beds in the river. Used to slay them on the beds in the Madison Chain, but the river spawn always crushes me.

Anyone catch any this weekend in the 5, 5a, 6 region? What paterns were working? Where the heck were they?

    Flick:

We caught some nice smallies too, probably like 6 between 15-18 inches, on topwater, flukes, and even spinnerbaits. But the largemouths, man I just couldn’t find one.

I know I should be happy to get some nice smallies, but I am really trying to LEARN this year, to try and find bass in all seasons of the year, and this period of time just is my weakest time. I am just looking for any advise in finding largies this time of year and water conditions.

if they are on their beds, try tossing something right in their on them, wormin with a slow fall my fav is the lizard works real good for me, but i might be wrong but i think the slow fall is key when they are on their beds anyone else?

I was doing pretty well finding fish early in the week, but on pool 10 the river has gone up around 3 ft. and has spread the fish out. Hopefully things will get better as the water drops.

Don’t feel bad. Post spawn largemouth can be difficult for anyone to catch. I would suggest looking for staging areas if you are serious about finding LM but if it were I the smallies are already in summer pattern a willing to play Tug-o-War.

I was going to post about my adventures in the last week as well. I found the high water to be rather difficult. Had 4 good smallies in about 2 feet, sand bottom, and rip rap with little current. I was actually going to post something about largemouths, too, as I couldn’t find any! I had 2 small largemouths, that’s it! What exactly is a staging area in terms of the river? I know it’s basically a temporary holding place, but what would that be on the river?

I went up to pool 10 on sat and sunday. Sat late afternoon the water had come up about a foot from friday night, but i did manage to pull in 2 keeper lm (14 &15 inches-released) and 7 smaller bass in the 10-12 range. Sunday the water was up a little more and I caught 4 short fish. All fish were shallow, a couple looked like they had eggs and had a red pooper indicating current spawning. With the stained water, sight fishing was out of the question.
