Largemouth spawning

OK, the water is nice and warm and the largemouth should be spawning. So, yesterday we were out fishing some backwaters in the bluff slough area. There were plenty of 1-3′ shallows with brownish lily pads and no bass. Here’s my question…Would this be a spot for spawning fish? Also, would bass prefer fresh, green vegetation to spawn around? ie. that would not be a spot to be fishing for spawners. What do you guys typically throw for spawning fish? I’ve heard all about sight fishing, but that seems a bit hard in the muddy miss. I’ve scored on topwaters and other familiar lures this time of year in shallow water (not sure if those fish were for surely spawning.)

Greg hope these tips will help you. Not all bass spawn at the same time and when you start to see fry the spawn is just about complete. Bass in the murkie water will tend to stay shallower then say in a clear lake. Also keep in mind that they like a firm bottom for spawning and if that is not available they will use logs or roots.Lures: more like patience, many will work but persistance is key.As for sight fishing it can be a little tougher but it can be done. Last thing remember brown weeds give off carbon dioxide so try and find the new growth.

Do a little research on Biology and you will quickly find that largemouth spawn at 70ish. Last I checked the water temp constant was around 60 which was last weekend on pools 9 and 10. The largemouth will run up these areas to gain warmth but for bedding fish you need to look at the edges. What you are noticing is that the cool Largemouth water combined with falling water levels is keeping them on the first edge adjacent to deeper water. remember that depth is relative. The area you are in is by all likelihood a spawning flat but may or may not be one of the better ones. If you are trying to find the best flats they will be located next to wintering areas with obvious flats to offer ample feeding opportunities.

I was fishing a small lake in northern IL. last Saturday and there were bass and crappies guarding beds on the shallow flats – the water temp was a balmy 57 degrees. I also noticed bass guarding beds on the Fox River side channels in N. IL. Sunday – not sure about the temp there but I’m sure it was close to 60. BTW, I did manage to entice one nice 20.25″ 4.5 pound bass to take my spinnerbait.
