I have found the opposite. Spring is prime time for spinnerbaits IMO. When the water is between 50-60 is the best time. Bass are prespawn and aggressive, and you can comb shallows and trees fast with spinnerbaits.
In fact, when it gets warm in the summer, I usually find myself rarely grabbing SB’s.
May 17, 2002 at 10:43 pm #243105hey thanx! thats gonna help a lot, i usually dont fish them in the spring, bc i always heard it was too early but thanx for the info!….

I was fishing some backwaters two weeks ago on pool 5A with spinner baits and in an hour we took 3 real nice largemouth. The water temp was 55 degrees in 2-3′ of water in a back bay – the bass had no problem taking the spinners. Watch out for the slimers.

May 19, 2002 at 3:06 am #243180I agree. Springtme is “Primetime” for SBs. I often find that if I can’t get em’ on jigs and slow moving presentations I can run a spinnerbait or crankbait and get them to react. Always keep an open mind!!!
LoomyMay 22, 2002 at 4:52 pm #243395i would also have to say its a great time for spinnerbaits, one reason they are so popular is there really isnt a bad time for them , between a jig or tube or craw and a spinnerbait you hardly need anything else tied on
May 22, 2002 at 7:38 pm #243420Unless you want to miss out on the most fun!!! Which is why I always have a topwater tied on from May through October. NOTHING beats a big ole bass coming up and putting the hurt on a topwater.
May 23, 2002 at 2:49 am #243458hey Mossboss do u have pretty good luck on a mossboss..i always get a lot of hits an follow ups on them..but its hard to hook them good……have u had the same promblem??? i only get in the ones that really really pound it…
May 23, 2002 at 3:03 am #243463The secret to hooking fish on the MossBoss that i have found is to 1) get the newer MossBosses with the hooks that are longer off the back of the lure, and 2) to take a pliers and “open up” the gap in the hook some. That really seemed to help my hooking percentage.
However, in the heavy slop where the MossBoss is best, you are always going to have quite a few blowups with no hookings. I actually use frogs or rats or whatever more. I have also noticed when you are getting hits from smaller bass, you have more misses. Big boys seem to just destroy them more often.
Man, now I am getting PUMPED for some sloppin!!!
May 23, 2002 at 3:07 am #243464Same here mossboss…you said it…NOTHING beats a big old bass coming up and putting the hurt on topwater. ..you do any bassin on pool 4 or 5?

I grew up in Fountain City, so I have done a ton of bassin on 5a. I love that pool. I have fished 5 some, seems like we always end up after smallies there though. Never have caught to many largemouth, but have had a couple of real good days on smallies. Never been on Pool 4 fishing. The stretch below Pepin looks like it may have some real good spots though.
I live on French Island now, and I fish alot on Lake Onalaska/Pool 7. Now that I have a boat that does over 30, I plan on trying alot more spots!!
How are 4 and 5 for largies??? From you and your brother’s Pool 5 reports, sure seems the smallmouth are doin OK there!
gregPosts: 108May 23, 2002 at 6:02 pm #243517French Island huh?! Do you frequent Bob’s Bait and Tackle? That’s my favorite bait shop in the world!! In fact, I just got back from there 15 minutes ago!
AnonymousGuestPosts:May 23, 2002 at 9:46 pm #243534Something to remember when fishin cold water spinnerbaits is to slow it down BIG TIME just enough for the blades to thump and keep it near the bottom.
May 24, 2002 at 3:22 am #243569yeah we got a really awesome smallmouth hole…..but for largemouth i got a couple holes i hit along the spring an summer an usually get some nice Largemouth out of there..
May 24, 2002 at 2:01 pm #243581I like to use Northland’s Jaw Breaker for this situation, and have fewer misses than with a Moss Boss. It’s made of metal so you to start you’re retreive before it hits the water, but you can use this to you’re adantage and let it sink into open water pockets because the bass will hit it then to. It’s smaller and rides deeper than the Moss Boss and that will give less misses. It takes some practice to keep it from getting hung up in the weeds, but after you get the feel for it, it works great, I usaually even cut the weed guard off to increase the chances of a good hookset.
