Garlic?

Why do so many baits and scents come in Garlic? I’m just curious if there is something special about the chemical makeup of garlic or is it just a strong taste that stands out?

Also, does anyone use anything like Megastrike on a regular basis and do you think it makes a fish hold on a little longer?

I’ve used some baits with garlic and talked with others who swear by it, but I’d just consider garlic or salt impregnated baits another tool in your arsenal. I do agree that bass hang on longer because of salt and garlic. Not sure if its because of the taste or scent, but who cares? Its probably both. Also, while I’ve never used Megastrike, I have used other scent attractants like Dr. Juice, with some success. There have been times when I could outfish a buddy and trace the cause to 1 difference – scent.

I’ve been using Megastrike for some time. I really can’t tell if it helps but I’m sure it doesn’t hurt. I don’t use it regularly as I’ve never believed that added scents work well all the time. This is a strange position for me to take, however, because I love inpregnated plastics like YUM, Power Baits, Chompers, etc. because the fish do hold on longer.

I only add scents when I feel the fish are there and I’m not getting bit so I want to start changing things. I’ve been more successful changing color shape or size than from changing scents but have had some success with it.

I suppose adding scents is like everything else. There is a time and place for it but it isn’t always and everywhere.

One perfect example when to add some is if you keep throwing to the same place and getting bit but can’t get the hook set because the fish drop it to soon. I’ve added Megastrike here and the way the fish took the bait changed allowing me to get the hook in him.

Two warnings about Megastrike. Be very careful putting on Spinnerbaits. This gooey stuff gets on the blades and they will never shine again cause you can’t get it to come off. The second is don’t leave the tube laying on the boat deck cause when you step on it the tube explodes and it takes forever to clean it up.

    Yes that was from experience.

That had to be a mess Ken..

I use garlic ’cause it takes my smell off the lure…and makes my breath smell better.

I use a product called Cajun Hot Sauce {crawdad flavor] the product is looks just like megastrike, the bottle everything.
    I also use garic sprays.
To eliminate scents out of your tackle,is like taking the smell out of your dinner expeirence.

Bass do react to scents… I would agree completely.
How they react may or may not be in your best interest….
“they don’t hurt”… How do you know they don’t hurt. Scents…
I guess I am not making much sense huh… Interested though,
I’d like to know how you know, they know, the bass that is, that the scents you use make sense to them…

I’m afraid you lost me…. But that would make scents that sense work.

    J.C.,

So what you are saying is that it makes sense to use scents if the fish react positively to the scents. .Thus making sense to use scents to make cents. But, if the scents don’t make sense, then it could cause me cents to use scents.

I guess it all makes sense

I’m still neutral whether or not scents make sense. But what I do know is it makes sense to NOT be in the same hotel room with Bassinal when he’s dropping his scents!!! Trust me, you’ll leave the room faster than a starving cheetah trailing a yak!

Scent is usually the last part of the presitation I worry about,if I can locate some fish and feel the area should be fished more, I will then try different colors, scents, ect.

But I do love garlic scent a lot of the time.
