    Flick or Fireflick

I know this pattern you guys have been working for the bass has held up for quite some time now as I’ve seen the proof of your handywork from all the 4 Lb smallies you guys are catching lately. So what’s the largest so far this spring? The one that Cody had about a week back looked huge! Just curious more than anything…..

    James,

Yeah I would say Codys was by far the biggest Smallie that was caught out of there this year. I would be guessing around 5lbs. it looked like a PIG in the picture….Now you can only wonder what one would look like that weighs 6lbs..LOL..about 3-4 years back i got one out of there that weighed 5lbs 13oz..that one also went back like all the others.

Flick, what type of jighead do you rig the Do’s on?

    Hey Leo,

I think Flick an fireflick were just using a plain jig head an feeding it through the tube like a tube jig…….

Super doos are solid so I’m quite sure they’re using just standard round heads with good hooks. I have a pretty good sized photo of that last set of smallie pics they sent me and the jig looks to be a light green head…. around 1/4 ounce in size…. plain round ball.

The jig that I was using was 1/4 oz. The reason I was using so heavy was so that I could cast further out. I kept a good distance away in order not to spook them. As far as the Super do, I would put them on just like a Mister Twister tail. I hope this helps.

Pool 5 definitely sounds good. How many areas do you have that produce fish this time of year?

I have been finding smallies in three or four different areas. When we have found them they are in great numbers. In one case I caught nearly 20 smallies and then the person next to me caught the same number. Over 40 smallies in about 3 hours. The water came up a 1 and 1/2 today and my father played in one of our spots this morning and caught nothing.

    Fireflick,

Do you have any experience (or an educated guess) on what the fish do with the rising water? Do they pull out of these areas or are they just inactive and tough to catch?

Some of the best smallie fishing has been during this high water period. One of the spots I found fish last week was near a sand bar with a grassy vegetation growing on it. There was very little current on the bar and the current went around the bar. I think with the high water, especially during the spawn, they head for structure with verly little to no current on it. I hope this helps.

Sure does! Thanks for your input. I’ll be down tonight trying to put a few in the boat (and back in the water of course).
