If you love BIG river smallies, check out this fishing report from Jarrad Fluekiger of River Guiding about the HOT smallie action on pool 5. Plus an interesting side note on an unofficial but DNR Authorized study they conducted to determine population numbers.

OK, just a bit confused by the text. The 6.2 pound smallie I assume was not caught recently since Flick looks older than 10 in his photo, correct?

But there has been 12 smallies over 20 inches caught this week, correct? Man, now that is one nice haul. Have you weighed alot of these fish? I would think in the spring, a 21 inch smallie with spawn in it could go over 6 pounds.

I used to have a couple of holes like you are talking about where many huge smallies were stacked in like wood at certain times. One of the spots, we saw two guys fishing there two days in a row, and leave with 12 big smallies on a stringer. I wonder how many more days they did this, as the spot is now virtually dead.

The 6.2 Lb bass was caught some time ago. sounds like lots of 4’s and 5’s lately though.

A 21 inch Smallie might go over 6lbs. But i doubt it ..Mine was 23 inches an weighted just over 6…So i’m figuring a 21 inch small would go in the upper 5’s…..

Congrats on the nice smallies. Quick question though. What time of the day has been most productive?, Or has it not made a big difference?

    Thanks

Got out on pool 5A last night with Dodge Boy guiding. We worked our first rock edge and sure enough I got hit hard. Huge fight with only one problem. When we boated these smallies looked a bit to silverish for me and kept making a Baaaaaaaa sound. They were big but they all were sheepies!

    Still a good time )

Fished pool 5A on Sunday with moderate success in the shallow backwater areas with spinnerbaits (55 degrees). There might have been a local tourney going on because there seemed to be several people around fishing bass. No smallies, a few decent walleyes/saugers near the dam, plenty of sheephead.
