I was reading the 2002 MN fishing regs and the longer catch and release reg for smallmouth on the zumbro is listed. It says it is a “12 mile posted section DOWNSTREAM from the hwy 63 bridge at Zumbro Falls upstream to, but not including, its plunge pool below the lake zumbro dam.” That tells me where the upper boundary is, but I was wondering if anyone knew where that put the lower boundary. I went to the meeting last fall, and I thought the lower boundary was going to be the hwy 63 bridge. Thanks in advance.

I just talked to Al Schmidt, the warmwater stream specialist for the DNR in Lake City, and he told me that the lower boundry for the catch and release area is the Hwy 63 bridge in Zumbro Falls. So….it is catch and release only from the signs that are posted at the lower end of the plunge pool at the dam all the way to the Hwy 63 bridge in Zumbro falls. I did the creel survey on that river in the summer of 1998 and it has some great smallmouth fishing and has the potential to be even better. The Zumbro has some great riffles and deep pools in that stretch. Some are only accessible by canoe and some by road, if you’re a bank fisherman. Good Luck to all.
