John,
Back when I used to rig alot for walleyes in the daytime hours in the fall period, I would score some huge smallies on big sucker minnows in 12-15 foot of water right off some of the deeper rock piles looking for walleyes. If I had any smarts then with plastics, I would have targeted them more that way. Like James mentioned, weather can be crucial that time of year up there where one day of the sun shining can spark these fish midday into hitting topwaters still. Burning big white spinnerbaits in early October was one of my best ways to triggering strikes. Like all smallies in the fall periods, find one and you will find a pile of them!
