Hey guys, I was down to Shreveport Louisiana a couple weeks ago to pre-fish for the B.A.S.S. Federation Championship that will be held next week. Just wanted everyone to know how lucky we are to have the Mississippi.
The Red came up about a foot a day while we were there and if you guys think the Mississippi can become muddy, you aint seen nothin!!! The Red is just that. RED. It has a clay bottom and clay banks. It starts in New Mexico and runs through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and eventually runs into the Mississippi River. It was just like a red sludge or slurry the last day we were there. Visibility was ZERO, except in the far back of the oxbows.
The main channel was from 20 feet deep to as deep as 55 feet. Very swift, and rock reventment walls to contain the river in its banks. These walls are straight up and down and can be 20 to 30 feet on both sides. Too swift to fish these walls. Backwaters (oxbows) are solid timber and shallow clay flats. 99% of the time when you are off the main river, you are idling through very dense stump fields. This river system was very hard on equipment.
I will take the good ole Mississippi anytime. Mississippi is very clean compared to the Red. We don’t know how lucky we are until we leave home.
I will be flying out on the 14th to fish the tournament. Will fly back to Mpls on the 21st.
