New outboards

Okay, I know last year it was at least mid-summer before anyone started talking about engines/ performance, but with a couple very compelling new choices in high performance outboards looming on the horizon I thought I’d get it started earlier this year. Plus, with gas prices what they are, the far ranging river fisherman needs to be thinking about this sort of thing. Looks like the top two contenders will be the the new 4-stroke Verado from Mercury versus the Evinrude E-Tec HO (slated for release in early 2005). As I’m planning on a new boat for next year and know little to nothing about this sort of thing, any input would be greatly appreciated.

I have nothing but good things to say about my 150 FICHT Evinrude. There are always melons out there but I think if you talk to enough people you will hear nothing but praise regarding these FICHT.

the new 4 strokes are heavier and i dont know actually how much more dragg they will cause when trying to get into that shallow river water

Yeah it looks like the Verado will weigh about 20% more than a traditional 2-stroke. Not sure if that is a significant difference or not. Anyone…?

Could be… but, keep in mind the Verado is the first “Fly-by-wire” outboard, so the weight includes the steering mechanism and tilt/trim weight, whereas others do not. This weight, although is not 20%, is not insignificant.

Who I’d like to hear from is someone who owns and operate the Verado!

Verado should have a TON of torque, which should really increase low and mid RPM performance. Probably will blow away most 2 strokes in hole shot and accelleration. It is a very interesting engine. They have so much riding on it and invested in it, I would think it should be pretty reliable from the get go, but you never know with a first year product.

Good luck in finding someone who runs one!!

Is it true that the Verado is selling for $23,000- 24,000? JUST THE MOTOR? Dang! You can get a BRAND NEW Yamaha 225 VMAX for ~ $14,000. $10K difference. Hum…
