One lure that has been the topic of conversation on this site bi-monthly for as long as I’ve been a member is the Swimming Jig. Yea, this is a very versitle and EFFECTIVE lure, but does anyone here live and breathe grubs? I know just last summer I started fishing with grubs and it has totally changed my fishing. I prefer a 1/4oz head with a 5″ smoke grub. (perfect shad imatation) I’ve found these lures to be most effective on sand points and flats. They are so versitile and realistic. They are especially effective in those mid to late summer mornings when the smallies are pushing the shad up on the sand bars. You can keep it up towards the surface or clunk it along the bottem. I just feel that there is no more realistice lure to imitate a shad in that type of senerio. I have also found other applications for the grub where I would normally throw a jig or tube. I have thrown them on cut banks and had unreal success. Does anyone else find luck with these lures? If so what techniques, colors, weights do you use?

I have had tremendous succuess throwing grubs in pre-spawn conditions. I throw them on the edges of their usual spawning falts and crawl them on the bottom. I usually use a 1\8th ounce jig head to get a slow fall in case of suspended fish, but like that size for most all applications. Texas rigging them with the same size bullet weight if the conditions call for a weedless presentation.

I would like to start throwing them more often but have a hard time putting away that nasty swimming jig! I think that more often times then not that a 5 inch grub will imitate a stressed shad than anything other than a jerkbait.

I think it is a matter of confidence when trying to use a bait in different conditions. We all have our favorites for each situation and have a hard time getting away from what works. Tournament situations often bring pressured fish and throwing a bait that is alittle different can make a huge difference in cashing a check!

Has anyone had success fishing grubs in thick vegetation?

when fishing thick veg. I always throw a swimming jig or a fluke but when it comes to more open water conditions I think bass see a grub less than anytother lure.
