The Calm b4 the Storm

As I sit here bored , looking at the weather. It reminds me of the “legend” (if you can call it that) about Bass (or any fish for that matter) biting before a storm system comes in. Just wondering if you’re for or against the theory.

I myself am for it and i’ll explain my reasoning. Bass primarily feed by site. Hence the Large eyes. As a Bass senses a storm coming (all animals can do this) they instinctivly know to stock up on food. Reason: As a storm blows through, most often heavy rains and such muddy up the water and visibility is much lower, thus causing them lockjaw until things clear up.

I’m not saying it’s impossible to catch them during or after, but like I said, topic of discussion. Thoughts?

I agree with the theory completely… but for a little different reasons. An approaching storm front indicates a falling pressure (barometer). Fish to sense this rapidly dropping pressure change, and react to it. The commong reaction is, just as you said, going on a quick binge. Some species tend to react differently… some get much more aggressive, other not so much. Muskies, IMHO, are the ones that flat out go nuts.

Yep, I believe greatly in the falling barometric pressure as well.

If I could leave work right now, I’d be on the water, spankin’em.

Hey… how come you’re on the Net & not chasin’ mama Slop around the house?

    Were I 20 years younger… I’d still be a little freak .

    Thanks ,

I agree to both of you. But for kind of a combination reason that you both mentioned. When a storm comes in, the barometric pressure dropps considerably. The baitfish and bass need to come up off the bottom, possibly even to the top to equalize their air bladder. When the baitfish do this, it drives them from the weeds, brush, or cover that they live in and vulnerable because they are in open water. Common sense will tell you that Bass can see much further in open water than through eel grass. All the varibales fall into place with pressure dropping for an all out frenzy.

Sometimes it works in ones favor. The biggest reason for a win in a small tournament last weekend was that nearly everyone decided to make a long 30-40 mile run to another pool. I didn’t and stayed close to the ramp and probably had all 3 of my keepers in the boat before they even got to where they were going. Then about 9 or so a storm came in. The keeper fish shut down after that and even the shorts stopped bitting when another front moved through at about 2pm.

I guess it was luck cause I really didn’t factor in the weather when I made my game plan, but I’ll take ’em anyway I can get them.
